Indie pop vocalist Carla Morrison performed a very intimate show at the Orange County Observatory on Oct. 30.
On this particular Thursday evening, Carla Morrison delivered a show like no other – complete with a personal Q&A. As she performed solo on a stage surrounded by fresh flowers, she took multiple breaks to answer questions from her dedicated fans. Instead of cancelling her show due to her band not being able to make it on time, she decided to handle the stage by herself, and she pulled it off well.
She started off her set with “Una Salida,” a track that captured her high-pitched vocals in a complimentary way. What make her sound unique is a mixture of her vocal range and a distinct pedal effect, which she noted adds to her “vintage” tone.
As the night went on, the questions started to get more personal and without a shame and full pride, Morrison answered them, respectively.
Before starting “Hasta La Piel,” she shared with her audience that the lyrics were inspired by a combination of events: one of her ex boyfriends, a long distance relationship, and her take on a single woman’s life. She mentioned that the lyric which translates to “inside of me there is a seed and without you it may want to die,” she wrote thinking about a child without a father. She explained that the potential child in this story would feel down without a complete household in this situation. Not all stories carried a serious tone though, she also shared stories of her refusing to answer an ex boyfriend’s call and how now she shares the stage with the love of her life.
An interesting story she shared was about the way her music instantly grew after it being featured in a popular show in Mexico. She mentioned being contacted by well-known pop-rock vocalist Natalia Lafourcade, who was then interested in producing Morrison’s album. After quickly agreeing to do so and telling Lafourcade that she was going to attend her show, Lafourcade gave Morrison the opportunity to be the opening act.
Other tunes that were featured in this crowded night were, “Eres Tu,” and “Maleza,” from her recent album Dejenme Llorar, as well as “Pajarito Del Amor,” and “Compartir” from Mientras Tu Dormias.
To end her set, Morrison shared her roses to the audience, showing them that the amount of affection they give her, she feels is mutual.
