Gotta love El Lay… where else in the world do you get to satisfy your hard-to-please panzota to the max? It is in the streets of this concrete jungle that you will find (rare) culinary delicacies. La neta es que en ningún otro lugar things like Mexican food and Korean food could successfully come together as one. Following the tradition of taqueros and loncheras in East L.A. and Huntington Park, the folks over at “KoGi” decided to put their own spin to them mobile eateries. At “Kogi” you will find a tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and even tortas like you’ve never seen them before… Or Korean BBQ like you’ve never seen it before, todo depende de tu punto de vista. Either way, you must experience this unique “restaurant” at least once.
Lo mejor de todo es que a diferencia de las loncheras y los puestecitos callejeros that have a certain spot already set, the peeps at “Kogi” travel all over the place… something that could be hard and almost impossible to follow, pero que con la tecnologia está más que accesible via their official website and Twitter, avisándole a sus cientos de fans en dónde y a que hora van a estar poniendo su changarro.
Cabe mencionar que “Kogi” es sumamente popular, por lo que no matter at what time you decide to hit up their ponchera, you WILL come across to lines of epic propotions… casi casi haciendole competencia a la cola que se forma afuera de “Pink’s”. So for starters, know that it might take you at least 30 minutes to an hour to finally order some goodies.
La comida
While the idea of Korean BBQ tacos and burritos sounds intriguing and interesting, it’s something that could easily go VERY wrong if not executed properly.
Fortunately, at “Kogi” they make it work… Korean and Mexican food unite thanks to the almighty powers of tortillas and salsa.
The Blackjack quesadilla is a nice intro to this gastronomic experiment. You get a flour tortilla with spicy pork, caramelized onions, cheddar and jack cheese topped with “Kogi’s” special salsa verde. A bite of this quesadilla is enough to make the long line worth the wait, it’s that good.
But that’s not it… to fully experience “Kogi”, you have to try por lo menos un taco de cada “carne”. Tienen tacos de pollo, short rib, spicy pork, and even tofu.
All the tacos at “KoGi” are topped with sesame-chili salsa roja, julienne romaine lettuce and cabbage tossed in a Korean chili-soy vinaigrette, cilantro, green onion & lime relish, and crushed sesame seeds.
Out of all the choices, perhaps the least eventful, thus the safest option, are the chicken tacos… if it weren’t for the toppings this taco is like the ones over at Del Taco.
Now, the tofu tacos are not for everyone… if you’ve had tofu before and/or you’re a vegetarian you WILL love them tofu tacos- they’re scrumptious… now if you’re a newbie… ick nast!
The short rib tacos are extremely flavorful and the meat is beyond tender.
The ultimate stars of the “Kogi” menu are definitely the spicy pork tacos. Not only are they tasty, but they’re seriously spicy y te dejarán chupándote los dedos.
Beware the tacos are made with two mini corn tortillas… así que si tienes un apetito feroz, order accordingly… two tacos are soooo not gonna cut it.
