El Huarachito: Deelish Mexican comfort food

el huarachito plato campesinoAunque el área de Los Angeles está repleta de restaurantes de comida Mexicana, not all of them serve high quality tasty food… lots of them concentrate on quantity rather than quality, and those that do focus on quality se pasan de la raya con los precios y puede resultar algo carito comer fuera.  If what you want is some delicious Mexican comfort food that will literally blow your mind- to say the least- then you MUST head over to Lincoln Heights and stop by “El Huarachito”, where you’ll find authentic Mexican food, como hecha en casa.  Even though they have all kinds of food at “El Huarachito”, su mero mole está en el desayuno/ almuerzo.  You haven’t had authentic homemade food unless you’ve stopped by this joint where everything is handmade- desde los chips hasta las tortillas.

Holy guacamol-ey!

“El Huarachito” is your typical hole-in-the-wall, por lo que tienes que estar bien atento while driving through Broadway Ave. ya que se pierde entre tantos restaurantes and shopping centers. This joint is hella small since it can fit a max of 50 people, and that’s pushing the envelope.  If it was another restaurant the décor could be cheesy and even cheap; however at “El Huarachito” the kitschy sombreros and colorful zarapes hanging from the walls seem just right. el huarachito guacamole

El servicio es de primera, not only is the staff friendly and attentive, they seem pretty sincere y hacen todo lo posible por hacer que el cliente se sienta a todo dar… always with a genuine smile on their face… now that’s service.

Right away the server brings out the notorious chips and salsa wich are superb. The chips are made right then and there, y la salsa ni se diga- it’s a tad smokey and spicy.

If you’re a first-timer at “El Huarachito” they give you a complimentary guacamole. Now, it’s not just any guacamole. The guacamole at this joint is THE BOMB. Neta que sí—it’s fresh, slightly citrusy and has an almost perfect balance of creamy and zestyness, plus the red onions give it a distinctive taste.

Less is more

There is no doubt that sometimes the simple things in life are the ones that make us happy. The same thing applies to food.  If you want to really enjoy a meal you don’t have to go to a fancy restaurant and spend loads of cash on some stuff you never even thought was edible.

In this case, eating at “El Huarachito” is more than just stopping by at any restaurant to quench your hunger and stuff your face… eating at this joint is truly quite an experience—casi casi como diría Enrique Iglesias, una “experiencia religiosa”… bueno, maybe not that much, but almost.

You could have a hell of a meal with just an order of handmade tortillas either de maíz o de harina, a side of refried beans and loads of salsa… you really won’t need much more since the beans are just refried to perfection.

plato campesinoNow, if you want to eat like there’s no tomorrow, go for the “Plato Campesino”, with so much food que te dejará tan lleno that it will last you well into the evening… heck, you might not eat at all for the  rest of the day.

The now famous “Plato Campesino” comes with chilaquiles, carne asada, refried beans, eggs, fried potatoes, and of course load of tortillas hechas a mano— for this meal, the corn tortillas are highly recommended.

You can either choose from red or green chilaquiles- the red are mild and they green ones are billed as hot; however, they chilaquiles are not really spicy but they have a certain kick to them, plus they’re very flavorful.  The carne asada is a generous portion of deliciously seasoned and tender meat.  You can choose your eggs al gusto- ya sean estrellados o revueltos, depending on your mood, either way they’re good- not too salty and not too bland.  The refried beans are delicious, and the fried potatoes can also make a great meal on their own since they’re crispy, savory and beyond flavorsome.

When in Rome…

Of course you can’t go to a place called “El Huarachito” and not have a huarache… it would be like going to “Pink’s” and not having a hotdog.

You can choose any meat topping for your huarache, but it’s hard to resist the powerful scent of chorizo, so that’s always a good choice.  The chorizo huarache is filled with refried beans, comes with loads of chorizo (of course), it’s covered with guacamole, sprinkled with Cotija cheese, cilantro, and drizzled with milky Mexican cream— none of that Knudsen nonsense.

Ahora, si quieres algo más that will take you back to when you were a little kid, then you MUST have the molletes.  I personally haven’t seen, heard or tasted one since I was a little eleven-year-old chubster back in Chilangolandia, so coming across molletes in a menu instantly awoke my inner fatty.

The molletes at “El Huarachito” are fully loaded- a bolillo cut in half, grilled, then topped with refried beans, cheese, cream, scrambled eggs, nopales, and avocado— the ultimate breakfast from heaven.

No cabe duda de que “El Huarachito” has raised the bar for other joints in the area.  It’s a true Mexican comfort food gem… so when you’re feeling homesick, you miss your mom’s, your tia’s or your grandma’s cooking, heat over to the little hole-in-the-wall haven in Lincoln heights known as “El Huarachito”.
