Approaching their two-decade anniversary, the Washington DC group, Thievery Corporation made its annual visit to The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles to expectedly please their fans or “thieves” as they like to call them.
The multi rhythm, multi sound, and multi musicians Thievery Corporation came back to this crowd-favorite outdoor stage on the cool Saturday night of September 27th, 2014, to give their long-time fans a much anticipated performance, and for the newbies an incredibly surprising treat.
Opening for the group, son of Reggae-icon Bob Marely, Stephen Marley, started the night with his tropically raw rhythms. The night was soon filled with warmth, dancing, and subtle aroma of “herbs.” His friendly smile and long dreads accompanied by an acoustic guitar on his lap got the crowd singing to familiar tunes as he paid homage to his father; ending his set with “Could You Be Loved.” His exit was graced with young children waving the Jamaican flag as they left the stage.
Following a brief intermission, the beloved faces of Thievery Corporation, Rob Garza and Eric Hilton took their perspective decks and led the parade of musical guests on stage.
Three beautiful ladies made several appearances throughout the night. Beginning with Natalia Clavier, who emerged on stage with eccentric style and theatrical makeup. Clavier mesmerized the audience with her renditions of “Lebanese Blonde” and the very haunting “Claridad.” Member of the Thievery Corporation family, collaborator Loulou Ghelichkhani flaunted her voluptious figure dressed in all black as she switched the beat to a bossa nova sound with “Firelight” in support of their new album Saudade.
The crowd was allowed a break from the sensuality and was hit with the raw political, reggae, hip-hop sounds of Mr. Lif, Sleepy, and Ras Puma. Alternating their appearances on stage, these vibrant and colorfuly-dressed gentlemen pumped up the vibe and got the party going.
Amongst the myriad musicians, the stage and audience were captivated by the stunning redhead Shana Halligan, who brought out her illuminating aura in a sheer, gold, and shimmery dress. Undoubtedly, her deliverance of the very hypnotic “Depth Of My Soul” was the ultimate seduction of the night.
The infinite performers came, took the microphone, and went and each musician switched instruments and positions like a beautiful choreographed dance, including Mr. Rob Garza, who left his cigarette on his deck to step down and strapped on a guitar.
It was a night of traveling from Jamaica to Brazil and back via the countless sounds and rhythms under the stars of Los Angeles as witnesses.
