Ok, well maybe not the world. But the Venezuelan rock band definitely wants to come out winners of at least one of the four 2012 Latin Grammy’s for which they are nominated. The band’s album Indeleble is nominated for “Best Rock Album” and “Best Recording Package”. The album’s single of the same name received a nomination for “Best Rock Song” and the band itself is up for “Best New Artist”.

Not bad for a bunch of guys in their early 20’s, and especially not too shabby with it being their first shot at a Latin Grammy. But Luis Jimenez, Andres Belloso, Andres Sucre, Juan Ignacio Sucre and Carlos Sardi are not phased by the tough competition. In the “Best New Artist” category alone, they’re up against 3BallMTY who has shown to be a favorite in various awards ceremonies of this year. In “Best Rock Album” they compete with veterans of the genre Molotov and San Pascualito Rey.

After tonight’s 13th Annual Latin Grammy’s in Las Vegas, which will be broadcast live on Univision from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET/PT (6 p.m. Central), Los Mesoneros will know whether or not their first foot in the door is enough to secure them a spot among the elite group of Latin Grammy winners.

Luis talks to us about the nominations, here.

What characteristics of Indeleble do you think grabbed the attention of the Academy?
We worked with Hector Castillo who has worked with Cerati, David Bowie and Bjork, and that definitely elevated the level of production. On the other hand, the sincerity of the album is also very distinguishable.

Do you think this is the year for singer/songwriters?
People are really supporting music for what it is and not because of the label or promotions behind it. We are an independent band that has been working this way since the beginning; I think people appreciate that and admire that purity.

How does being such a young group work in your favor?
We still have that great sense of immaturity that allows us to experiment with different variables and that gives us the freedom to grow. We’re a bunch of young and immature guys, which gives our music more attitude.

What’s the feeling with being nominated alongside established artists?
More than anything it’s a great honor. Viniloversus is a good rock band, Ulises Hadjis is a great friend of ours and all the other artists are also very talented. Obviously we would like to win but you never know what the results will be.

Which one of the awards are you most hoping to take home?
“Best New Artist”. It’s in the general category and it’s that one very important recognition that can catapult careers. If we win, it would open doors for us on an international level, which is something that we’ll be working on for the new year.

What’s on your post Latin Grammy agenda?
Tour Latin America, work on new material, and if we win “Best New Artist”, get ready to tour the rest of the world, too.
