As La Mala Rodriguez hit the stage of the legendary Troubadour club in West Hollywood on July 5th, the fierce MC lived up to her name as the biggest “bad ass” of Spanish hip-hop by firing killer lines that took her fans to the brink of delirium.
But it was Los Rakas’ mix of hip-hop, reggae and dancehall music that prepped the crowd for the Queen of Spanish hip-hop. Accompanied by live drums and electric guitar, and dressed to kill in dominatrix-esque gear, La Mala dominated her audience strutting from one side of the stage to the other with a tremendous energy that was shared between her and the audience.

When we spoke to La Mala a few days ago about her Troubadour gig, she was excited to perform with a live band rather than a DJ, which is what typically accompanies her on stage. And during the performance the synergy was evident as she often improvised with the musicians closely following her lead.
But the entire show was not spitfire, La Mala also showed her softer side and Spanish roots as she sang the chorus of “Como un Titere”, which she delivered with a voice worthy of a flamenco singer.
Between rap sets and ballads, La Mala also appeared inspired by her wardrobe and at one point mimicked a sexual act on the guitar player’s leg. And of course, the crowd enjoyed it.
La Mala satisfied all her fans in attendance as she performed songs that spanned the length of her career and that solidified her as one of the biggest stars of the Spanish hip-hop world.
