Cantante cubana Diana Fuentes

Songstress Diana Fuentes is one of the leaders of new singer/songwriters and musicians carrying the flag for new Cuban music

Recently, Diana finished working on her second album, Planeta Planetario (Planetary Planet) which includes the collaboration of musician, producer and her husband, Eduardo Cabra (Visitante) from Calle 13.

Planeta Planetario is an eclectic album that mixes Afro-Cuban sounds, pop, elctronica, folk and boleros.  With this new production, Diana hopes to take her career to the international stage.  With her interpretive force, on the song “Otra Realidad”, Diana pays homage to great artist of her birth land like Elena Burke, La Freddy y Omara Portuondo, while other songs talk about her experience adjusting to her new home in Puerto Rico. The first single which is already out, is called “Será Sol”.

Diana was recently at the Latin American Music Conference (LAMC) in New York where she played a couple of shows and after the LAMC Diana came to Los Angeles to do some promotion work and we had the opportunity to talk to her about the new album.

Al Borde: Tell us about you experience at the LAMC?

Diana Fuentes – it was a great experience; we played at the Gramercy Theater and an acoustic show at SOB’s.  It was a lot of hard work doing press interviews and we were always busy, but it was a lot of fun.

Tell us about the new album, Planeta Planetario.

This is my second album, and I wrote most of the songs and I collaborated with Eduardo Cabra on a couple of songs and I also did some Cuban classics, so I am very happy with the final outcome.

How has moving to a new country influenced your music?

More than anything, I have become closer to Cuba, maybe is the nostalgia, but now I feel as if I appreciate Cuban music even more and that’s why I’ve included a small tribute to my birth country.

Tell us about your experience working with Visitante.

It was a lot of fun, we learned more about each other and the way each one of us works and we really enjoyed the experience of working together.

Are you planning on coming back to Los Angeles to play live?

Yes, the album is coming out in August and we are planning to be back to promote the album live so we’ll definitely come back to play.

The new single “Será Sol” can be downloaded on I-tunes and streamed on Spotify.  To keep track of Diana’s music and plans, she can be followed on Facebook  and her official website.
