It took a while for this chick to snatch a piece of the poptart pie, but finally after being declared “The Next Big Thing” by Blender back in 2008, Katy Perry managed to get noticed in the pop stratosphere. She has always relied on selling a “badass chick with an attitude” persona, and if you just take a look at her first two singles, you can’t help but to sort of agree. Her first single “UR So Gay” helped launch her career thanks to a little thing called the internet, AND the endorsement of Perez Hilton, which apparently is the #1 Web Celeb, according to Forbes. Then came her second single, and that’s when things took a turn on Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson’s career.
One of the Boys
Perhaps one of the songs with major airplay in 2008 was Katy Perry’s “I Kissed A Girl”. Even though at the beginning this single surprised many and pissed off others thanks to its girl-on-girl action content, its no brainer lyrics, catchy hook and infectious chorus, “I Kissed A Girl” surprisingly became a “hit”.
Her follow-up single also made its way up the charts- after all, it was produced and written by the same team that penned her most successful single to date. Now with a third single up and coming- the sappy, cheesy and insipid generic ballad “Thinking Of You”, Katy Perry seems to be sinking back into anonymity.
Even though her “hit” singles had taken her all over the place, her live performances dejan mucho que desear. While many argue that several award nominations add points to her career and give her some sort of validation, truth of the matter is, not even a Grammy nod makes someone a talented artist, after all, Milli Vanilli did score one of those.
Katy Perry’s album “One of the Boys” is packed with fillers, if you’re addicted to all things pop, the only “outstanding” tracks are the first three singles she released, the rest are just uninspired filler tracks.
