This pop punk/ synthpop/ powerpop/ alternative group is definitely not new to the scene, however, it is until now with their latest single “Good Girls Go Bad” that they have begun their commercial crossover/ Top 40 domination. Cobra Starship has been around since 2005 and has a total of three albums under their belt including their latest album “Hot Mess”.
If you’re waiting for some anti-establishment and anti-materialistic schmuck that’s normally attached to the punk/ pop punk label, you’re gonna be waiting for a long time. “Hot Mess” is simply a fun album, nothing heavy, no political agenda, no social issues… just pure, good ol’ fun. After all, with everything that’s going on in the world, who the heck wants to worry some more?!
The key for a band like Cobra Starship to achieve the level of success they have achieved so far is not to take themselves too seriously… of course without sacrificing their artistic integrity and their pizzazz.
Even though they’ve been linked to other pop punk acts like Good Charlotte and even to some of the emo bands out there, Cobra Starship have managed to be all of the above and none of them at the same time since they have the facility and the talent to merge all those styles, take a little bit from each of them and just sprinkle some fierceness and make some memorable jams.
“Hot Mess” has a slightly different feel than their two previous efforts… not only is it more commercially appealing, but the quality in both production and execution are seriously top notch.
This is definitely an exceptional piece of music… you can seriously play it from beginning to end without pressing the skip button once. Cobra Starship’s “Hot Mess” is one genre bending hot album.
