Charly Alberti is perhaps best known as being drummer to the legendary eighties Spanish rock band Soda Stereo, but his professional career didn’t end with the bands dissolution in ‘97. Alberti then followed up with his current band MOLE and several other successful entrepreneurial projects that ultimately lead him to his environmental initiative: R21.
R21 (Revolución 21) aims to serve as leading environmental agency among Spanish speaking countries. It is made up of a distinguished group of scientists, activist and researchers whose purpose is to raise awareness about these issues focusing primarily on the youth.
Their mission is simple: to contribute to the development of a sustainable community by educating people on taking control on the issue through real life and practical solutions that could be done from home.
On a recent radio interview, Alberti said that “you don’t need to dress up in a monkey suit and protest on the streets to become a full-blooded activist. Shutting off your kitchen faucet when you are not using it would immediately gain you that title.” According to R21, it is those small changes that- when exercised daily by the masses- would generate a true and visible global change in our environment.
Charly Alberti will be representing his R21 foundation on November 29th at the Common Pitch, a social-innovative technology festival in Chile that will host Al Gore as key speaker and live performances by Devendra Banhart, Devotchka and many more. In times where super storms and out-of-season hurricanes are making top world news, it seems only logical for our focus to shift to global warming and the need for a development of sustainable energy in Latin America also. It is rewarding to see musicians use their stardom power for a positive cause that affects us all. So to this we say “yes!”
