Carla Morrison has received four Latin Grammy nominations for her latest work, Déjenme Llorar, including “Album of The Year”, “Song of the Year”, “Best Alternative Album” and “Best Alternative Song”. So what does Carla do to celebrate the acknowledgement?

She signs up to play a private benefit event to raise funds and awareness for Las Fotos Project, a non-profit, community-based photography program with the mission to create positive change for young Latinas in Los Angeles facing adversity.

The date is in celebration of the publishing of Las Fotos Project’s second book: “Nature Double Exposed”, in which photography taken by members of the program are featured.

The “by invitation only” benefit show takes place on Tuesday, November 13 in Highland Park and was open to RSVP. However, and to no surprise, capacity was reached rather quickly. But of course it was. Carla is one of the musical acts of the moment and has been since her time with Babaluca, when even then her unique vocals rang of nothing short of stardom.

Her Latin Grammy nominated Déjenme Llorar (Let Me Cry) album is her first LP. With the help of producers Andres Landon and Juan Manuel Torreblanca from Torreblanca, the album was recorded in Carla’s Tecate, Baja California apartment using everyday household items such as jugs of water and trashcans.

As the title suggests, the album is full of heartfelt and melancholic lyrics with simple musical arrangements that draw listeners to the emotions the young singer conveys. If we didn’t know any better, we’d swear that when listening to her we were listening to any one of the great Mexican singers of all times. Depth, vocal range and musical creativity are what we hear when we hear Carla sing.

Since the release of the album, she has sold out the great Metropolitan Theater in Mexico City and gave a memorable performance at this year’s Vive Latino Festival before a crowd of thousands, most of which sang her songs lyric by lyric.

Her participation in the Las Fotos Project goes to show that after all her success, including the Latin Grammy nominations, Carla’s heart gives more than a platform for heart wrenching lyrics. Just last year, she donated her song “Hoy Yo Quiero” to a Japanese record label to raise funds for the victims of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
