On Tuesday, November 13, 2012 and before heading off to Las Vegas for the Latin Grammy’s Awards ceremony, Carla Morrison gave a benefit concert to help raise $5,000 to provide free photography classes for 20 girls participating in the Las Fotos Project.
Organized by the non-profit and Mucho Music, the event took place at The Highlands in the heart of Highland Park and was attended by an intimate crowd of 250 fans.
Attendees were treated to a nice reception with beverages and appetizers, and were able to enjoy a display of photography taken by students of Las Fotos Project, which according to its mission statement, provides an avenue where students can express their artistic talents and explore their imagination, while building self-confidence.
The official presentation of Carla Morrison began with a short introduction about the program and requests for donations. Then, the young singer/songwriter and her band took the stage and presented songs from Déjenme Llorar, the album that garnered the singer four Latin Grammy nominations including Best Alternative Music Album and Album of the Year.
With a simple stage set up, Carla was close and personal with her fans. In response, they showed their appreciation to her by clinging to the singer’s every word. Between songs, Carla interacted with them and even expressed her support for the gay and lesbian community as she alluded that love knows no boundaries.
Fans sang along and danced to every note. But without question, the highlight of the evening was the title track of the album, “Dejenme Llorar”, which with its first notes had fans applauding the melancholic lullaby.
In these days of mega superstars and divas, it is refreshing to see artists who are not afraid to stay humble and that can easily go from playing in front of thousands of fans such as at the Vive Latino Festival, which Carla played earlier this year, to smaller, relatively unknown venues. Especially when there’s a good cause behind it.
Carla, I’m a fan.
