“Ready For The Weekend”: Funky Retro Dance

calvin harris ready for the weekendWhile he’s no Beethoven or RedOne for that matter, DJ Calvin Harris is most certainly one of the most underappreciated European dance producers.  For being only 25, this Scottish musician/ singer-songwriter/ producer has a shiz load of work experience under his belt, having worked with the likes of Kylie Minogue, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Dizzee Rascal, Izza Kizza, Tiësto, among others. “Ready For The Weekend” is Harris’ second album, and a good one for that matter.  Unfortunately he has been unfairly shelved under the “handbag house” slot, and while he may employ some of their elements, Calvin Harris is a totally different story from “handbag house” (o sea, punchis punchis pre-fabricado y sin chiste, pero eso sí, muy pegajoso). “Ready For The Weekend” manages to bring musical elements from the late 80’s and early 90’s, sprinkle some contemporary sounds, and voila! You get a really funky retro dance record.

calvin harris something for the weekendTo enjoy Calvin Harris’ music, you just need to chill the eff down. Simply prepare yourself to have a good time and dance the night away, or at least bob your head hasta que te den calambres en el cuello… otherwise you will totally hate it.

For starters, all of the musicians collaborating with vocals, sans Dizzee Rascal, are pretty much known. Unlike David Guetta’s star studded “One Love”, Calvin Harris decided to make the music and nothing but the music be the main attraction.

“Ready For The Weekend” is a fun retro electropop album that mixes unpredictable dynamics, Italian house-style piano vamps, intoxicating synth riffs and addictive stomp beats. A must have if you’re into dance.
