La Santa Cecilia

Local band, La Santa Cecilia was awarded the Grammy for the best “Best Latin Rock, Urban or Alternative Album” for their album “Treinta Dias” and staying true to their principles, during their acceptance speech, the band dedicated their Grammy to the 11 million undocumented workers living in the U.S.

La Santa Cecilia is a band that has always stayed close to their family, friends and fans and proof of that was last week’s performance at Olvera Street, which brought hundreds of people out to celebrate their nomination.

Within seconds after La Santa Cecilia were awarded their Grammy, facebook and tweeter exploded with congratulatory messages of love and pride from fans, and many fellow musicians from the L.A. scene stated that La Santa Cecilia is proof that with determination and hard work, it can be done.

I still remember the first time I saw La Santa Cecilia two years ago at the Make Music Pasadena festival and I was blown away by their passion and energy and I became a fan right away.  From that point on I have been following the band and have seen them perform several times and it doesn’t matter if they are playing some big festival or playing some small local stage in support of some worthy cause, they always bring with them that passion and love that is contagious and they always bring a smile to people’s faces.

Having followed the band for the last two years, I have also seen their interaction with their fans before and after the shows and I have never seen them turn away a fan who wants to take a picture or give them a hug or just say hello.

There are some people out there who say that they are happy and proud of La Santa Cecilia winning a Grammy, but their music is not really “rock”.   To that I would say that they are probably right, but then again, what is “rock”?  Rock came from jazz and blues and with time, it evolved to what we now know as rock & roll, but other than some of the older bands like Pearl Jam, who really plays rock & roll in the classic style nowadays?

I think rock & roll has always been more about attitude and what you say.  When Bob Dylan began his career, he was a folk singer, but he is still considered a rocker, but it is more because of what he says, and I believe that La Santa Cecilia definitely have that rock & roll attitude, they talk about important issues and even when they play a cumbia, they play it with the attitude and punch of rock & roll, so keep on rocking and be proud of your Grammy La Santa Cecilia, because we are certainly proud of you.
