Kiko Veneno at SXSW

From his beginnings back in 1975, with the band, Veneno, Kiko Veneno has been known as an artist who is not afraid to push the boundaries of music and genres by fusing different styles of music like flamenco, with pop and rock & roll.

As a solo artist, Kiko Veneno has continued to visit uncharted musical territories and this coming March 12th and 15th; Kiko Veneno will bring his music to the SXSW festival as part of the “Sounds From SpainSounds from Spain” showcase.

To learn more about his appearance at SXSW and his music, we had a candid phone conversation all the way to Sevilla, Spain, with the iconic Kiko Veneno.

When asked about how he felt about festivals such as SXSW, Kiko replied: “I love this kind of festivals because we not only participate as a musicians or artists, but also as a fans of music, because we can gets exposed to all different kinds of music and we can have “jam” sessions in the streets or bars with musicians we have never played with before.  Festivals likes this also gives us the opportunity to share our music with really interested music fans and we can’t wait to play in Texas.

Last year, Kiko Veneno released an album called “Sensación Térmica” and Kiko indicated that “This album was produced by Raül Fernández (Refree), a young Catalan who is part of this new generation of alternative musicians. “Sensación Térmica” is an album that was very crafty in the technical and musical sense.  The production was something very innovative and adventurous, but from the very beginning, my demos sounded very different than anything I had done before. In the end, with the production of Refree, it gave the album a very natural sound with a very strong personality and we are very happy with the results.

After I mention the album from last year, Kiko stated that he had also worked on another album, which has already been released in Argentina and Uruguay to a great reception and it is about to be released in Spain later this month.  Kiko indicated that “the album is titled ‘Pimiento indomable’ and it was recorded along with my Uruguayan colleague Martin Buscaglia.  I spent a month in Uruguay with Martin where we wrote most of  songs and later the songs were recorded in our home studios in Madrid and Uruguay.  This album does not sound like anything Martin or I have ever done, it is something completely new.

As part of the Sounds From Spain showcase, Kiko Veneno will be accompanied by other Spanish artist such as Arizona Baby, Betunizer, Fuel Fandango, Lori Meyers and Soledad Velez.  Sounds From Spain will be showcased on Wednesday March 12, at the West Tent in Brush Square Park and on Friday March 14, at the at Lucille Patio Lounge on 77 Rainey St. in Austin, TX.
