Colombia keeps on churning out new talents and now is Esteman’s turn. Esteman will be making his debut at Los Globos Night Club this coming Saturday, March 29th along with the explosive Argentine/Mexican cumbia combo, Kumbia Queers and DJ 3BolasDF, a side project from the members of El Conjunto Nueva Ola.
In 2009, the video “No Te Metas Con Mi Facebook” (Don’t Hack My Facebook) hit youtube and it went viral and Esteban Mateus Williamson, better known as Esteman, became an overnight sensation and Colombias newest pop star. A couple of more singles followed and his first album, 1er Acto, was released in 2012.
Esteman’s music has been described as the “mixing [of] styles and influences in order to build catchy melodies loaded with ironies. Synth plastic sounds together with percussion elements, saxophones and old school guitars, [along with] eclectric pop, disco music, indiepop, and thought provoking lyrics and choreography.”
The name Esteman, just like his music, is a play on words by taking “Este” (this) and the English “man” and creating “this man”. From a young age, Esteman was attracted to music and a studied singing at music academies and also musical theater. As his musical skills developed, Esteman began writing and composed theater musicals. After finishing school, Esteman moved to Paris where he studied acting and theater arts.
Upon his return to Colombia, Esteman continued to study art and theater arts but eventually he was led back to music and he was able to combine his acting experience and his musical skills and created his persona and musical project which led to his viral video.
Esteman’s first album, 1er Acto (first Act), it’s a cocktail of sounds and rhythms that start off with “Aqui Estoy Yo” (Here I am), which includes a collaboration with Andrea Echeverri, lead singer for iconic Colombian band, Aterciopelados. This first cut sets the tone for the rest of the album with its eclectic use of rhythms and sounds that go from acoustic guitars with a rockabilly or country western sound, to surf music solos, whistling, electronic sounds and mariachi style trumpet melodies and over all of this, Andrea’s passionate voice.
Other highlights include, “Oh Lá Lá!” which includes a collaboration with Monsieur Periné. This cut has a swing vibe with some verses in French and a flute solo reminiscent of Ian Anderson from legendary British band, Jethro Tull. On “Otro Planeta” (Another Planet) Esteman talks about how sometimes one feels so different to everyone else that one feels like one is from another planet.
1er Acto is an album rich in sounds and styles that is very hard to stop listening to it as each track brings something new and interesting that it is almost visual. One could easily close one’s eyes and feel as if being transported to different landscapes that are painted by the music.
Esteman will be presenting his album and all his other hits at Los Globos Night Club this coming Saturday and along with Kumbia Queers and 3BolasDF, you are guaranteed to get your body dancing.
