If you are into electronic music, you have heard about the buzz that this young dude by the name of Ookay has been creating in the past year. Ookay has quickly come up in the scene because of two reasons: his passion for music, his tracks and remixes, and more importantly: his love for pizza.
On Saturday, Belasco Theatre hosted the Jungle event with a packed line up featuring Ookay alongside supporting DJs Branchez, Bixel Boys, Fei-Fei and Kittens. Although it was a late show until 4 a.m., the crowd did not resist coming to Los Angeles to experience The Jungle.
By the time the second act Fei-Fei was done, the place was completely crowded with anticipating dancers and Ookay fans. Smiling the whole time she was DJing, Fei-Fei successfully delivered a set full of trap and hip-hop, including popular songs like Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda.”
Once she exited and Branchez made his way to the stage, the atmosphere made a complete turn around. Branchez presented a different type of set from the previous trap mix. He cooled everyone down with a more ambient set, decreasing the beats per measure into a more R&B and hip-hop zone. Towards the end of his set he did however fastened the tunes, creating the perfect transition to Ookay’s set.
Right when Ookay stepped behind the decks, the crowd immediately started to jump around and even mosh pitted to his electronic house and trap mix. The mix was hype through his hour and a half set featuring songs from himself and his colleagues as well as songs from the radio. Ookay played a wide range of tracks, from the popular tune “Summer,” by Calvin Harris, taking it back to Skrillex’s remix of Benny Benassi’s “Cinema,” and even going further down the line when he dropped a remix of Nirvana. Yes, Nirvana.
Why is Al Borde so interested in this producer? Well besides his music, his easygoing personality also has a lot to do with it. What is different about this particular DJ is that he is known to be down to earth and does not hold back when it comes to joking around. Remember SNL’s “When Will The Bass Drop” skit earlier this year? Well Ookay dropped that song in his set, delivering it in a different light, ultimately proving the song’s potential by the way the audience danced to it. Ookay interacted with the crowd all night, giving them a shower with his water bottle as well as giving out Ookay foam fingers, representing his stage name. He also had the packed venue get on the floor when he dropped Dillon Francis and DJ Snake’s track “Get Low,” and get this – he got low himself.
The energetic presence and way of being able to mix a set that had his fans raging the whole night is what makes this producer impressive. This fall, he will be playing huge upcoming festivals Electric Zoo in New York, Sun City Music Festival in Texas and TomorrowWorld in Georgia. If you are into electronic music, he is one to check out.
