It seems that after releasing two albums, Camilo Lara por fín agarró la onda and decided to loosen up a bit. Mexican Institute of Sound’s third album “Soy Sauce” is an ode to Chilangolandia, las cumbias, al tunka tunka, y al desmother total. If you’re not familiar with M.I.S.’s sound, this is a great way to venture into its crazy world. Even though genre fusing is no fresh news on the Latin Alternative scene, what sets “Soy Sauce” apart from other albums is the fact that its all pure fun, Carlos Lara doesn’t take himself too seriously and he doesn’t expect you to do so either. Solamente ponte tus botas, tus trapos domingueros, amarrate la trenza, échate un tequilaza y cáele a la pista de baile. ¿Te crees muy salsa? No hay pex! O sea, no importa que seas mega-fresa o más naco que la Nacasia y la Nacaranda juntas, just enjoy the music y déjate llevar.
Mexican Institue of Sound superbly merges a variety of sounds and genres que sacarán al Mexicano que llevas dentro. Camilo Lara offers a marvelous concoction of electronica, cumbia, boleros, mariachi, beatbox, funk, and everything in between… heck, there’s even a badass cover/ reimagining of The Verve’s “Bittersweet Symphony”.
The album opener couldn’t have been better. “Cumbia” definitely sets the tone as to what to expect from “Soy Sauce”. The rest just flows better than a tequila shot, or a Caguama, depending on your budget.
