María José’s long awaited sophomore album has finally seen the light. Many will rejoice, and a shiz load of others will be left with a huge WTF expression on their face. Upon announcing her departure from Warner Music and stating that she was gonna go indie, fans and music aficionados went bonkers with the idea of having María José take full creative control of her next album since she has a hell of a voice and she’s extremely talented. Following Moenia’s steps on “Stereohits”, la Josa set sail to reinvent the ‘80s with some of her fave songs, which happen to be a tad unconventional taking into consideration her bubblegum pop background as a vocalist from Kabah. In theory, “Amante de lo Ajeno” seemed promising. Too bad everything always looks better on writing. Good idea, wrong approach.
If you thought the first single “No Soy Una Señora” originally by Melissa, was an indication of where she was gonna go with this album, you’re in for a huge disappointment.
Filled with sappy ballads and cheesy tunes, “Amante de lo Ajeno” se queda corto and instead of reinventing some great, fabulous, and fagulous jams, María José just belts them out over mostly mediocre arrangements as if she were a contestant in La “La Academia”.

There’s nothing new here, just a great little compilation para los nostálgicos de corazón.
Not everything is bad news though, amidst a cacophony of forgetabble jams, there are a few hints of brilliance. Josa’s biggest asset is her voice y la neta es que se luce, also there are some flickers of originality, i.e. Jeanette’s “Frente a Frente”, which can easily beat Circo’s rendition. Also on “No Soy Una Señora”, María José channels Moenia via Belanova in a sassy and sexy yet commanding way.
