Ever since her debut in the early 90’s, Italian chanteuse Laura Pausini positioned herself among the top power ballad belters in the industry. With a unique voice and albums filled with melodious harmonies, bittersweet and sometimes cheesy lyrics, Pausini has scored several hits. “Primavera Anticipada” marks her seventh album in Spanish. Regardless of all her talent, Laura Pausini is not known in the music world for contributing anything new. As a matter of fact, Pausini has stuck to the same formula that launched her career back in 1994 with with the song “Amores Extraños”. The formula has held strong for all these years, but in her latest offering, it seems to be wearing off.
Primavera Anticipada
Almost every single Laura Pausini track follows the same pattern- it starts off softly with either guitar or piano, slowly builds up to a melodic bridge and erupts into a sing-a-long voluptuous chorus.
While “Primavera Anticipada” is a well produced album and Laura Pausini shows once again her chops as a talented multi-instrumentalist and singer/ songwriter, the overall products lacks innovation and pizzazz.
It has a somewhat “timeless” element to it, but instead of working towards the album’s advantage, it just overemphasizes on the fact that all the tracks sound like something straight out of her previous works.
We get the title track twice: in the first half of the album as a duet with crooner James Blunt. A great duet in theory, however it fails to deliver once you listen to it and find out that there’s no connection between the singers whatsoever… yes, their voices work well together, however Laura Pausini sings in Spanish and James Blunt responds in English in something that seems to be a totally different song- in a way it feels like the beginning stages of a relationship where the people involved “like” each other, but don’t seem to be on the same page.
However, on the second half of the album, “Primavera Anticipada” with just Pausini on vocals proves to be dazzling.
Overall, “Primavera Anticipada” is an album that will please all Laura Pausini fans and perhaps spawn a Top 40 song, or at least score a spot as an opener for a telenovela from Televisa, but either way listeners (fans and general audience alike) will be left to wonder: when will Laura Pausini come out of her shell?
