Prior to their appearance at weekend one of this year’s Coachella Festival, Café Tacuba made a stop at Pomona’s historic Glass House with a performance that gathered two generations of fans.
“Los Tacubos” performed several songs from their most recent album, El Objeto Antes Llamado Disco. During the set, songs like “De Este Lado Del Camino” and “Aprovéchate” were received as if they were already part of the band’s classics.
But without a doubt “Olita Del Altamar” was the highlight from the new songs performed, such that one courageous fan crowd-surfed her way from the back of the room to the front of the stage where lead singer Rubén Albarrán received her and welcomed her onstage for an impromptu dance.
As usual, Rubén ran and jumped around the stage with the same energy that set him part from the musicians that rose with the band in the late 80’s. And although Rubén made several serious comments about politicians and the lies young people are taught in school, a light sense of humor was always present, especially when they did their synchronized dance sequence on “Dejate Caer”.
To the surprise of many in the audience, classic songs like “Como Te Extraño”, “Las Persianas”, “Las Flores”, and “Ingrata” came early in the show. Songs like “Eo”, “No Controles”, “El Fin De La Infancia”, “Eres”, and “La Chica Banda”, made their way into the set as well.
“Maria” and “Esa Noche” made for a perfect ending to a night of great music and an amazing stage performance by a band that can fire up small venues like the Glass House, or gigantic stages such as Coachella.
