Café Tacvba at Nokia Theatre

After having given us taste of some of the new material at the Glass House and the Coachella festival a few months, Café Tacvba returned to L.A. to give us a full scale offering of the songs of their new album “El Objeto Antes Llamado Disco”.

Café Tacvba have always been known for their high intensity and energetic shows and musically they have always been one of the most daring and innovative bands and now they have taken their live shows to a whole new level with one of most elaborate and exciting stage lighting displays I have seen in a long time.

I remember back in 1989, when I first saw the Rolling Stones on their Steel Wheels tour, I said: “I would pay just to see their light show” and after Friday night’s Café Tacvba’s performance at the Nokia Theater, I have to say that I would pay just to see their light show. With lights moving in conjunction with the beats of the music and movements of the band members, lasers overhead lit up the venue as the mesmerized audience was left in awe of this magical display.

Some people may say that many bands use high tech lights to hide some of their shortcomings as musicians or performers, but Café Tacvba have nothing to prove to anyone musically or performance wise and this light display only enhanced their already great musical talent.

El Objeto Antes Llamado Disco

This light show perfectly combined with the more electronic sound of their last two albums, “Sino” and “El Objeto Antes Llamado Disco” of which “Aprovechate”, “De Este Lado Del Camino” and “Olita De Altamar” were some of the highlights.

Fans of the older material of Café Tacvba’s long career would not be disappointed as they played a healthy dose of classics like “La Ingrata”, “Como Te Extraño”, “Dejate Caer”, “La Chica Banda” “María”, “El Puñal Y El Corazón” and of course, “Chilanga Banda”, amongst others.
