Adolfo Sanchez fashion designer interview

Adolfo Sanchez, the designer, is just as fabulously young and sinfully creative as is Adolfo Sanchez the couture and ready to wear collection. His roots sprout from the streets of Orange County where the designer took his first steps with fashion at the prime age of 13, and where he’ll take part of the upcoming OC Fashion Week at the Artist’s Village in Santa Ana.

It was during that age when he first became mesmerized by runway shows and taught himself how to hand sew in order to create replicas of the high-fashion garments he admired. Most notably, it was the designs of Vivienne Westwood that caught the eye of the young Adolfo. His early love for the British designer’s rebellious and punk-with-a-twist designs resonated with the future designer who was also very much involved with the punk scene as well.

And to top it off, he’s doing it with the idea that women can be fabulously powerful, sexy and edgy when dressed in Adolfo Sanchez, of course.

The work of Adolfo Sanchez, in a nutshell, as told to Hilda Gabriela by Adolfo Sanchez himself.

As a kid I followed a group of people that were really into going to fashion shows and we would literally try to recreate the runway looks and would wear them to clubs, raves and underground parties. Then I started working retail for high-end boutiques like Gucci, Versace and Cavalli and there I really fell in love with the craftsmanship of the pieces. So in 2005 I got myself a sewing machine and taught myself how to use it. Prior to that everything I did was hand sewn, I taught myself and never went to school for this.  Finally in 2006 I started pursuing my own clothing line “Adolfo Sanchez”.

Adolfo Sanchez fashion designer interviewMy collection for women is my signature style. It’s edgy, sexy and modern. We’ve dressed celebrities from Gossip Girl actresses, Shayne Lamas from “Leave it to Lamas”, we’ve pulled clothes for Nicki Minaj for one of her albums, and Fergie’s stylist just approached us as well. I would love would, love, love to dress Daphne Guinness. I think she’s amazing and a true fashion icon. Grace Jones would also be another amazing person to dress. We just presented the line to Rihanna’s stylists as well so if that pulls through that would be amazing.

Adolfo Sanchez fashion designer interviewI’m also working on a private plus size collection. We’re launching that during Full Figured Fashion Week in New York City at the end of June. What’s exciting about that project is that the owner of that line approached me with her original concept and wanted me to revamp the collection. She wanted it more modern and in tune with what’s happening in fashion right now as far as shapes and silhouettes and I took her original idea and completely revamped the line to a more modern and edgy collection that is very much my signature style.

I also have a men’s line that is just in the sketching phase. It follows the signature strong, edgy, modern look that my women’s and couture designs are known for. I’ve also done a lot of costume work. Most recently, I was asked to create costumes for an event that Absolute Vodka organized to promote their latest project.

Adolfo Sanchez fashion designer interviewI’m inspired by everything. There’s music constantly playing in the background at my workstation. When I’m sketching, for example, I like to listen to classical music. I like instrumentals and music that inspires elegance. I also love electro music; it’s a very futuristic type of genre and is a perfect influence on some of my more forward ideas. I listen to Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga, and I’m all over Rihanna’s music right now. All of these women are all powerful, edgy, and modern and maybe that’s why I love their music so much, because they personify the type of woman that wears “Adolfo Sanchez”.

You can catch the action of “Adolfo Sanchez” at the upcoming OC Fashion Week held from May 18th to May 22nd. And meanwhile check out the Adolfo Sanchez Spring/Summer 2011 “Dark as Night”, “Golden Angles” and “Blank Canvas” collection that has sheer tops, high waisted skirts, and back bearing dresses to die for.
