Unlike other autobiography authors, for David Shields, an autobiography is, and needs to be put together and have the same flow a regular novel has.  David Shields does not stick to the usual autobiography format and approaches his life-story quite differently.  Instead of focusing on the ups and downs, the good and the bad, he shies away from the black-and-white point of view and focuses on the gray areas.

{sidebar id=31}On “The Thing About Life Is That One SDay You’ll Be Dead”, David Shields dedicates a huge portion on the relationship with his almost 100-year-olf father… he also touches basis on growing old once you’re already old. He keeps everything straight-out and real, without exaggerating or sugar-coating things. Nowadays memoirs have lost credibility thanks to the blurred line between what’s actually real and what is an exaggeration.  That’s not the case in this book.  Some work hard to bring sexy back, Shields strives to bring actual genuine memoirs back.
