Chichén Itzá Restaurant is set to host the second annual “Chichen Itza’s Habanero Eating Contest” and is looking for contestants brave enough for the fiery challenge

The contest will be held on Sunday, June 17, as part of the Father’s Day Celebration at downtown’s Mercado La Paloma.

Contestants will be provided a bowl of chiles habaneros along with a plate of tacos de cochinita pibil. The person who eats the most chiles during the timed event will win a $50 gift certificate from Chichén Itzá Restaurant.

Families are invited to join in the fun, learn a little about the Yucatán and its culinary traditions, and cheer on their favorite contestants. Chichen Itza’s Habanero Eating Contest will begin at 2 p.m. Interested contestants can register up to one hour prior to contest time at the restaurant. Up to 10 contestants will participate in the contest.

Chichén Itzá Restaurant specializes in the cuisine of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, and in the Yucatán folks love their ultra-hot chiles habaneros. These small, round babies rate 150,000–325,000 on the Scoville scale making them hot, hot, hot. Compare this with jalapeño pepper that rate a mere 2,500–8,000 on the same scale.

Chichén Itzá Restaurant is located at Mercado La Paloma in 3655 S. Grand Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90007.
