It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that one of the most popular and used meats in pretty much every culture is chicken. No matter what part of the globe you live in, odds are that your country has a signature chicken dish. If you have come to love your chicken as much as the person next door, you know that you can never go wrong with chicken: you can have it in a salad, in a hamburger, in a sandwich, with some arroz y frijoles, with teriyaki… and so the list goes on. If you’re craving chicken with a twist and find yourself tired of the same old alternatives, it’s time to check out “Zankou Chicken”.
To-Go
While the name of this Mediterranean food joint says it all, you’ll find other non-chicken dishes. However, there’s not much variety. It’s pretty much chicken or beef.
Although “Zankou Chicken” is located on the ever busy and oh so glamorous Sunset Blvd., this restaurant it anything but fabulous. It’s one of those hole-in-the-walls that put little (if any) effort to create an appealing façade and any sort of atmosphere.
There is no ambiance here. You go to “Zankou Chicken” for the food and nothing but the food. The place itself is kinda iffy, the parking situation is horrible, and the service is rather questionable. Thus, it is better if you order your food to go. You’ll enjoy it even more so than chowing it down at this stuck-in-the-70’s joint.
Fast-n-Easy
Their menu is pretty basic as it has pretty much all the items you’ll find at any other Mediterranean food place- no surprises here.
My partner in crime and I decided to try the “Chicken Shwarama Plate”, “Chicken Kebab” and “Beef Kebab”.
Our order took a little more than ten minutes to come out- not too shabby, considering our food was freshly prepared, but a little slow for a “fast-food” joint.
The “Chicken Shwarama” plates comes with shredded romaine lettuce, diced tomatoes, tahini, hummus, pickled turnips, chicken shwarama, a piece of fresh pita and a side of garlic sauce. The side dishes were really good- especially the garlic sauce- now, if you’re going with your peor-es-nada or are thinking about getting some action later that night; you might want to skip the garlic sauce. While it’s beyond mouthwatering delicious, it’ll make you reek of garlic even after gulping down a whole bottle of mouthwash.
The chicken was moist and tender; the shwarama marinade was flavorful but not an overwhelming touch to this dish.
The “Chicken Kebab” was also flavorful- its outcome has a lot, if not everything to do with the fact that the chicken is slow roasted and is continuously showered with heavy amounts of garlic, salt, and oil.
The “Beef Kebab” was surprisingly good. The beef was well cooked- unlike other joints where they serve it charred on the outside and raw from the inside.
Más?
Unfortunately there’s no dessert, but after eating so much (since their portions are generous), you won’t have any space left.
“Zankou Chicken” proves that you don’t need any fancy schmancy venue to make a place popular and successful- it’s all about the food.
