Toast: Brunch Extravaganza

By August 13, 2008Food & Drink

ToastWe all grow up with a bunch of people telling us that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and while it’s true, this advice nos entra por un oído y nos sale por el otro. Some of us are just not the breakfast type of people- blame it on our fast-paced lifestyle, inability to cook, or just because we’re just too damn lazy to pour some cereal-and-milk.  Needless to say, even if you’re not “breakfast” type, that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a breakfast meal. Fortunately for you and the rest of us breakfast-skippers, there are places that serve lunch and breakfast 24/7… one of the most popular is undoubtedly Toast.

Just chill

If the name sounds familiar, it’s because you’ve come across “Toast” in several tabloids and gossip blogs.  While this restaurant’s heyday is long-gone, celebrities, d-listers and wanna-be hipters still find refuge in Toast’s comfort brunch menu.

Unlike other celebrity-studded joints, Toast is affordable, it has good food, it makes for a great hang out place (it’s delightfully comfortable) and the location couldn’t be better- it’s awfully close to The Grove.

Just like any other restaurant, Toast is not perfect. For starters, parking is just horrible- but then again, its Los Angeles… of course parking is going to be whack. Another thing that might piss you off is the wait. Weekends are usually the busiest days to go to Toast, however if you go on a Sunday, say at around 2pm you won’t have to wait more than 10 minutes for a table… but if you want to avoid waiting, stop by during the week.

Breakfast, Lunch, Brunch… Whatever!

Toast Bakery CafeYa sea que te gusten los huevos (no pun intended), a salad, a sandwich, or whatever you prefer for breakfast/ lunch (except chilaquiles), you’ll find it here.

A good way to start is with a side order of French toast.  This little delicacy deeply honors the restaurant’s name. The French toast is exquisite- it’s incredibly fluffy and sweet without being too syrupy.

Mi acompañante y yo, like always, love to eat more than our stomachs can handle, but it’s ok… it’s breakfast- we’ll have the rest of the day to digest the meal.  So we order a “Favorite Omelet” (yes, that’s the real name), a “Shikshuka Breakfast Dish”, “The Oscar” (because we’re superstars), and a bowl of fruit (because we didn’t want to come across as a couple of binging fatties).

Cabe mencionar that if you’re into omelets and nothing on the menu doesn’t rock your boat, you can go with the “create-your-own scramblettes” option.

You’ll know why the “Favorite Omelet” got that name after taking the first bite- there are great omelets and then there’s the “Favorite Omelet”- it comes with feta cheese, avocado, spinach, basil, and sun dried tomatoes.  The “Shiksuka Breakfast Dish” on the other hand, consists of a mess of peppers, garlic and onions topped with an egg.  And to finish off, “The Oscar”.  “The Oscar” for some reason, would be better as an appetizer, while it’s good, it’s not main-course material: chicken strips, guacamole, fresh salsa, eggs over medium and melted cheese all sitting on grilled corn tortillas- by the way, this is the closest you’ll get to Mexican food at Toast.

Sweet!

Toast's Red Velvet CupcakePor si fuera poco, Toast es también una panadería, so we just could not leave without trying any of their baked goodies.

While their cookies are a decent companion to their coffee, they’re nowhere near the ones at Diddy Riese.  However, the cupcakes make up for such lackluster cookies.

The cupcakes at toast are like “Sabritas”- o sea, “a que no puedes comer solo una”.  They’re just sinful, and orgasmically delicious… you’ll die, go to heaven and then come back for some more after you take a bite out of their Red Velvet Cupcake.
