Tantalûm: Romantic Haven

By July 15, 2008Food & Drink

TantalumEvery once in a while we either like to spoil ourselves or our significant others. Whether it is to celebrate a special occasion, make-up for a metida de pata, or just because… siempre nos estamos rompiendo la cabeza trying to find the right place.  If you are clueless and have no idea where to go, “Tantalum” in Long Beach might just be the right place. Its tropical theme instantly transports you elsewhere.  Unlike other similar-themed restaurants, “Tantalum” does not exaggerate or go over the top… showing subtlety at its best- tropical yet not imposing, pompous or gaudy.

Looks can’t be deceiving

Food and the great service aside, if you’re considering “Tantalum”, think no more… the view will definitely seal the deal.

The first thing you notice upon entering “Tantalum” is the glass wall that overlooks the Naples Channel… it’s just picture perfect- and the great thing is that no matter where in the restaurant you sit, you get a glimpse of that view.

It’s simply breath-taking, especially if you decide to go right before sundown.

You can enjoy a beautiful sunset while chowing down some “Yaniku Calamari” and sipping on a “Mojito”.  However, if you want some more alcohol to better digest the scenery, go with the “Sanctuary”- a tropical concoction of Vodka, pomegranate, cucumber and pineapple.

Asian-tinged feast

If the “Yaniku Calamari” was not enough for an appetizer and drinks, the chicken lettuce wraps are a great choice. The chicken is like no other.  If you’re carb-conscious you can even make a meal out of the chicken lettuce wraps.

Even though “Tantalum” is listed as an Asian food restaurant, don’t be fooled by the labels.  It is true- it has some Asian influences, but it’s no Thai or Chinese food joint. You will definitely not find chow main or dumplings.

The Asian influences in flavor and style are subtle and flavorsome.  Even though the herbs and spices typically used in Asian cuisine do not overpower the flavor of the dish, it has enough kick to it that you can taste some Asian zest in it.  En pocas palabras- “Tantalum” specializes in serving American food with an Asian flare.

If there’s one thing that might be seen as a con, is that the dinner menu in “Tantalum” is not as diverse.  However, after having a bite of their food, you realize that the reason for such a minimal menu is because in “Tantalum” the chefs prefer to specialize and perfectly deliver a couple of dishes than to throw a gazillion choices that might come off just average.  So, with that in mind- you’ll have some quality scrumptious food- regardless of what you order.

Bon appétite!

After analyzing the menu and trying to decide what to order, my companion and I decided to go for the “Ulu Watu Udon Noodles & Beef” and the “Pan Roasted Organic Chicken Breast”.

Both dishes where beyond delicious. Even if you’re not a beef person, just taking a bite at the “Ulu Watu Udon Noodles & Beef” will be enough to convert you and give red meat a second chance. On the other hand, the “Pan Roasted Organic Chicken Breast” was on point- fresh, seared to perfection and juicy as can be.

The portions at “Tantalum” are just right- enough to fill you up, but not so much to make you want to unbutton your pants.

“Tantalum” is certainly a place that’s best enjoyed with the company of your significant other- everything works out perfectly for a romantic escapade: great food, great service, and an excellent view.
