sinbala restaurant arcadaIf all you can think of when someone mentions Asian food is chow mein, orange chicken and fortune cookies, como que ya va siendo hora de que salgas de tu cueva.  There’s a whole world of flavor outside of the fried rice sector. Aside fro Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese and Thai, there’s another type of Asian cuisine that’s slowly but steadily growing a fan base en este lado del charco: Taiwanese food. Este tipo de comida aunque es poco comun por estos rumbos, it’s one of those foods you just gotta try at least once.  One of the best joints to get your Taiwanese food cherry popped is “SinBala Restaurant” in Arcadia, one of the most authentic eateries in the SGV that’s both a great pit stop for cheap eats and yummy shaved ice.

When it comes to trying something new, you have have an open-minded approach… eating Taiwanese food follows the same adage. See, Taiwanese cuisine is so much more different than the other Asian foods.  The tastes are stronger, the combination of flavors is bold, and at times the culinary concoctions might come off as bizarre and/ or just plain wrong… but there’s nothing to worry about, just give it a chance, que tu paladar y tu estómago te lo agradecerán.

La comida

sinbala sausageThe specialty at “SinBala” is undoubtedly the Taiwanese-style sausage, so you know they’re a must. They have over 20 different sausage selections to choose from, they range from the plain and classic with just garlic and a special sauce to sausages with mango, passion fruit, wasabi, etc.

The “SinBala” classic sausage includes one (rather large) sausage served with raw garlic and a special house sauce. Now, the idea of raw garlic doesn’t sound appetizing AT ALL unless you’re Buffy the Vampire Slayer… but it’s not bad at all. The strong garlic flavor is smoothed out by the meaty sausage… the flavors mix well, y lo bueno es que al final quedas satisfecho y sin un mal sabor de boca.

sinbala soup and chickenIf you want something a little more conventional, the eel rice is a great option. If you like going to sushi restaurants and ordering unagi, imagine getting the same thing but with five times the amount of the unagi.
At “SinBala” they also have a yummy chicken noodle soup combo que incluye un bowl filled with a delicious and light chicken broth with your choice of noodles, and a fried chicken leg on the side… an unusual but tasty finger-lickin’ combo.

Por si fuera poco, this joint is also known for serving some badass shaved ice. Now, if you’re craving a yummy raspado, you will not find it here… their take on shaved ice is different to say the least. Taiwanese shaved ice is a hit or miss for many, so try it at your own risk… who
