Pure Luck Restaurant: Meatless Wonder

By December 24, 2008Food & Drink

Pure LuckWhile pretty much every single person uses the Holidays as an excuse to pig out from Thanksgiving until New Year, sometimes after pigging out so much in between Thanksgiving and Christmas, our system starts going crazy thanks to the grease and meat overload. Instead of stetting yourself up to enter on a food coma, take it easy and enjoy some healthy food.  Now, healthy usually equals yucky when it comes to food, and we don’t want yucky after having such delicacies for weeks now.  Well, if you’re feeling lucky, head over to “Pure Luck Restaurant” in L.A. to get your healthy food fix— hold your horses before making that “fuchi face”, this is no ordinary food joint. Even though everything is organic and vegan, the food is surprisingly scrumptious.

Beginner’s Luck

Whoever coined the phrase “mujer al volante, peligro constante” surely didn’t know I existed.  When it comes to driving, I’m a disaster waiting to happen- I’m a bipolar driver: I drive like an old lady and I drive like a club kid on speed- both within the same 10 minute span. As if that weren’t enough, I have a terrible sense of direction—let me scratch that- I have no sense of direction.

Google Maps, Mapquest and even GPS are not enough to get me from point A to point B without getting lost.

So while running some errands, typical of me, I get lost.  Now, if you live in SoCal you have experienced the whacked out weather we’re having nowadays. One day is hot as hell, the next day it’s raining cats and dogs.

In a desperate attempt to relax, clear my mind, try to figure out a way to get back on track, and why not, stop my tripas from killing each other, I pulled over at what seemed like restaurant.

Pure Luck

Now, this place kinda looks like a restaurant, but since there’s no sign or anything that indicates it’s a food joint, added to the fact that I’m blind and it was pouring it could have been anything.  Fortunately it was a restaurant.

When I stepped inside and took a look at the menu, I was like “OH CRAP”. The last thing I needed was vegan food.  I needed some greasy food to ease my nerves and calm me down- some tacos, a hamburger… anything.

I didn’t want to go back to the rain so I decided to just give it a chance.

Boy, am I glad I stayed.

Say what?!

sweet potato friesAfter taking a look at the menu and making sure I was not imagining things, I was ready to order.  I was to start off with “posok soup”, followed by “sweet potato fries”, a “carnitas plate” and to end the evening “tacos de platano”.

The “posok soup” was just what my body needed. It was seriously the bomb- it seemed to be the bastard child of the minestrone soup and the tomato basil soup— oh so flavorful.

Although I’m neither vegetarian nor vegan, I do enjoy my “sweet potato fries”, however, the ones at “Pure Luck” were not feeling that lucky… you might want to skip the fries- they were way too thick and had no flavor to them.

After the fries fiasco, I was scared to try my main entree: a “carnitas plate”.  Now, how in the world are they gonna pull off carnitas in a vegan joint?  Leave it to the people at “Pure Luck”.

Pure LuckTheir “carnitas” are made out of jackfruit. While they didn’t look like carnitas, they did have a great taste. Jackfruit has got to be one of the best faux meat ever.  The “carnitas” were flavorful and juicy, definitely a must.  Since it’s a full meal, “carnitas plate” came with a side of rice and beans, so you’ll almost feel at home.

To finish off, the “tacos de platano” made their way to my table. Now I love fried plantain… they’re my favorite part of any Cuban food dish and I love them smothered in Lechera.  But in a taco?!
That’s definitely a must- fried plantains with caramelized onions in a corn tortilla, topped with vegan whipped cream.

While the whipped cream was a distraction, the “tacos de platano” were so tasty I had to get an extra order to go. I dare you not to.

So, if you’re not feeling so lucky or you simply want your taste buds to get more than the same ol’ food, head over to “Pure Luck Restaurant”, you will definitely feel lucky afterwards- especially after eating them tacos.
