Marix: Hollywood’s take on Tex-Mex food.

By February 26, 2009Food & Drink

Marix Tex MexWe’re so lucky to live in Southern California we don’t even know the magnitude of living in such a metropolis. Unlike other places around the U.S. of A, we have several options when it comes to entertainment, nightlife, culture, and of course food… after all, we’re in the epicenter of the ultimate melting pot.  Just like we can pretty much eat whatever we desire from any part of the world, we can also do the same with regional food: whether it originated in New York, Philadelphia, Texas, or Miami. If you have a palate for Mexican food or you just can’t have enough of it, a good change of pace without stepping too much out of the box, is Tex-Mex food.  One of the most popular “Tex-Mex” joints in the WeHo area is “Marix”, a crowd and celeb fave.

Marix Tex Mex

The folks at “Marix Tex Mex” have been around for several years now and they keep on going strong in spite of the economic mishaps.  Since it opened for business, this joint became the gayborhood hot-spot.  After all, it’s located in the heart of West Hollywood.

Marix Tex Mex CafeNow, this joint is not for everyone.  If you’re looking to have a nice quiet dinner, this is not the place to be. For starters, the music is playing at a ridiculously high level… at times you feel as if you were inside a nightclub.  Definitivamente corres el riesgo de quedar afónico if you dare to try to have a conversation with one of your friends.

Also, if you’re claustrophobic you’re in deep trouble. While “Marix Tex Mex” is a rather small establishment and many refer to it as intimate and cozy, everyone is so packed in y más apretado que una lata de sardinas.  You’ll definitely bump into someone sin querer queriendo, especially if you’re a klutz; the last thing you need are narrow spaces and crowded passageways.

A pesar de estos pequeños contratiempos, the staff is amicable and the service is quite attentive.

La comida

Unlike other restaurants in the WeHo area, “Marix Tex Mex” serves complimentary and bottomless salsa and chips.  Even though the chips are as generic as chips can be, the salsa saves them from mediocrity.  While it’s nothing out of the ordinary, it has a freshness to it that makes it taste better than what it really is.

If you want something to dip your chips in, order the guacamole- fresco y preparado a la orden.

Now, when taking a peek at the menu you’ll be surprised to find the standard items from any local Mexican food joint- nothing new or exciting on their menu.

You can never go wrong with the crowd faves, which happen to be the mixed fajitas, blue crab enchiladas and the tacos de asada.

The blue crab enchiladas and the tacos are rather bland; they’re just like the tacos and the enchiladas from other joints, but of course a bit more expensive.  What saved both dishes was the side servings of refried black beans. If you have a chance order an extra side of those- they’re scrumptiously creamy.

While the fajitas were very standard, the portions where more than generous- an order can easily feed 2-3 people.  They come with shrimp, chicken, beef, onion, and peppers.

Veredicto

If you haven’t had original Tex-Mex food before, realmente no es nada del otro mundo.  Its name says it all: Mexican food with a Texas flare.

Tex-Mex food is about hearty, rich flavors none of which are found at “Marix Tex Mex”.

“Marix Tex Mex” serves perhaps some of the best Cadillac margaritas in town, definitely worth the crowd and the waiting.

Pensándolo mejor, it’s not as bad si vas en plan de echarte un par de tragos con los cuates, especially during Taco Tuesdays where you can get lots of tacos and a special price on their margaritas.

It’s better if you order the margaritas by pitcher. Not only will you be saving your server several trips, you’ll also save yourself a couple of bucks.
