Por lo regular después de una noche de toxinas and right after the club while still fully wasted, there is nothing we want more than either some greasy food or Dennis. Es casi casi la ley de la parranda: you go clubbing, you get shiz-faced and then you sober up at the nearest hot dog stand or Dennis… depending on how hungry and/or drunk you are. While neither one of those joints have the best food ever, it usually does the trick. The thing is, after so many times, the same thing starts getting old. If you want to try something different yet good and still tasty, you can always count on “House of Pies”, located in the Los Feliz area.
Now, as it usually happens with joints with “House of…” as their name, the expectations are beyond high. Not only do you expect the food to be good, you expect it to be great. While the “House of Pies” might be indeed the ultimate place to get your pie fix… you might find the restaurant part a bit iffy.
Restaurant vs. Bakery
It’s not that the food at “House of Pies Restaurant & Bakery” is bad… it’s just not memorable. Claro, después de una noche de party la comida te sabrá deliciosa… but then again, everything tastes great cuando estamos medio happy.
When eating at this joint, no matter what time of the day –or night- you must hit the skip button on the typical “American
breakfast” (eggs, hash browns, and pancakes) and order some of their specialties instead.
The “Brazilian omelet” is beyond scrumptious… it’s definitely a must. It consists of a 3 egg omelet with bacon, pineapple chunks, and cream cheese… all covered in Hollandaise sauce.
Now if you just want something to munch on, their beer battered onion rings are a great choice. While they’re a little bit greasy, their special batter gives them a very unique and savory flavor.
The thing with “House of Pies” is the fact that they’re labeled as a restaurant/ bakery, thus making people jump into the conclusion that both the food and the pies are the bomb… which, in reality they’re not.
The food is good but not great… the pies on the other hand, whoa! There’s not surprise why this joint is called “House of Pies”.
Pie galore
You want it, they’ve got it. You can find almost any kind of pie and cheesecake at the “House of Pies”, all of them of course, home made and as fresh off the oven as fresh can be.
One of the most popular ones is the strawberry pie. It has a ton of fresh sliced strawberries and strawberry glaze on a graham cracker crust, with a dab of homemade whipped cream. It’s simple, sweet and tangy… certainly a must.
Another pie that’s off the hook is the banana cream pie- made with fresh sliced bananas y una crema hecha en casa tan deliciosa como para chuparse los dedos for days.
Now, if you want something totally off the hook, then you must have a piece of their peanut butter pie. Beware, it’s not even on the menu, so just ask for it and prepare yourself to have peanut butter like you’ve never had PB before.
If you want a memorable meal, you might want to consider going somewhere else. Now, if you want some amazing badass pies, then give this joint a try. ¡No te arrepentirás!
