Rub a dub dub, thank Gawd for “Grub”

grub los angeles bltThere are a gazillion diners and mom and pop joints that specialize in serving delicious brunch 24/7, pero así como hay muchos, finding a “favorite” and a “must” joint is not an easy task… as a matter of fact, it makes things just a little more complicated ya que hay mucho de donde escoger. If you haven’t chosen your favorite brunch grub spot, look no further and place L.A.’s “Grub” on the top of your list… o por lo menos give it a try, la neta que no te vas a arrepentir. The menu is quite similar to that of other diners in the area, but they do have a couple of things that you can only find at “Grub”, like homemade ginger ale, blueberry lemonade, and a badass bacon that will drive you insane… if you like bacon, and even if you’re a bit iffy about it because of the calories and the cholesterol, after having just an itty bitty piece at “Grub”, you’ll become totally addicted to this joint and its heavenly bacon… y eso sin exagerar.

The place

For starters, “Grub” is not located in your typical hipster infested strip, it’s tucked away in an easily to miss little street… however, that does not mean that it’s empty, word of mouth is way stronger than location and you’ll find this joint usually packed.

Décor is simple yet a little kitschy and the building itself is what gives “Grub” most of its charm since it’s a converted bungalow from the 1930’s.

The staff is hella friendly and some of the servers have a gorgeous Betty Paige punk rocker look with pinned up hair and hot ink included.

The food

Está de más mencionar que todo en “Grub” es preparado con ingredientes 100% frescos y de la más alta calidad… pero eso sí, de que es único, lo es.

Instead of serving the typical chips-and-salsa or its equivalent, depending on the time of the day you visit grub they’ll either greet you with a bowl of dried kids cereal (Froot Loops anyone?!), or chopped fresh veggies and pretzels.

A nice way to start the meal is with a quesadilla- it comes with bacon, cheddar cheese, green apple, and caramelized onions… in it you’ll find a little preview of their delicious bacon, which they like to call “Sweet & Sassy Bacon”.

grub laOdds are you’ve never had bacon like the one at “Grub”: it’s cooked in a subtly sweet maple syrup covered with a hint of herbs and spices… the finished product is simply delicious, it’s the perfect combo of soft and crunchy, and the flavor will almost immediately give you a culinary boner. It’s so damn addicting you might as well suggest them to change the name from “Sweet & Sassy Bacon” to just “crack bacon”… yes, it’s that addicting.

Another deelish dish it’s their jalapeño-bacon mac n chesse… a new twist on the traditional macaroni and cheese made with all white cheeses, jalapeño, and bits and pieces of that delicious “Sweet & Sassy Bacon”.

If you need a break from so much bacon, you can go for the BLT, which comes with tasty herb & garlic potatoes. The BLT is made with a yummy cheddar/onion Kaiser roll; it comes with garlic mayo, crisp romaine lettuce, and thick sliced tomato.

grub cookeisThe dessert

Aside from their bacon, “Grub” is famously known for their unique take on cookies. Their Fosse Cookies will blow your mind… es imposible resistir y comer solo una. They are homemade, straight out of the oven chocolate chip cookies with potato chips baked into them… yes, potato chips. An odd combination but a good one, the cookies are not salty at all, instead they bring another layer to the cookie, giving it a slight crunch to the soft and scrumptious cookie.  The cookie alone is worth the trip to grub, seriously.
