Big Mike’s: Philly Steaks & Subs Like No Other

By December 19, 2008Food & Drink

Big Mike's Philly CheesesteakAfter a full year of starvation and trying to get rid of the oh so shameful lonjas, the holidays come like a breath of fresh air bringing joy, hope, shopping and lots of food.  If there’s one time of the year to eat like a cow and not feel so guilty about it (at least not at the moment) it is during the holidays.  After all, without the holiday bingeing New Years resolutions wouldn’t be the same.  So after Thanksgiving it’s all junk food and stuff. Forget salads and “Subway”! However, if you must eat a sub make sure you get it from “Big Mike’s”, now those are REAL subs.

Like, Whoa!

“Big Mike’s Philly Steaks & Subs” is located in El Segundo, and is yet another hole-in-the-wall type of joint.  The aroma of their food takes over the whole shopping center in which they are located, which is just intoxicating and makes you want to eat even more so.

Although their main specialties are subs and stuff, their menu is rather limited. However, you won’t need much variety.  They only have a few selections, but from what we heard from the patrons, it’s all good.

One thing you have to know before heading over to “Big Mike’s” is that their food is not healthy, si no todo lo contrario. So if you don’t mind clogging your arteries for a bit, then it’s time for you to hit “Big Mike’s”… it’s totally worth the high cholesterol.

De-li-cious

For starters, don’t go all crazy ordering one of each since once sub is enough to fill you up for the rest of the day.  My partner in crime and I went for the Philly Cheesesteak, the Buffalo Chicken Cheese, and the Teri Steak and Provolone sub.

Of course a meal cannot be complete without side orders, so we got ourselves some cheese fries and garlic fries.

Now, I have not been to Philadelphia so I haven’t had a chance to taste a “real” Philly Cheesesteak, BUT after just one bite of “Big Mike’s’” I am utterly intrigued.  If their Philly Cheesesteak was disgustingly awesome I can’t help but wonder what the real deal tastes like.

Hands down, that has got to be one of the best subs I have ever had. Not only is it good-sized and filling but it’s mouthwateringly good.

The Buffalo Chicken Cheese and the Teri Steak and Provolone were good, but if you want something that will blow your mind from just a bite, you must go for the Philly Cheesesteak.

Now the fries, oh the fries. The cheese fries were not that great, I was honestly not impressed.  I was hesitant to try the garlic fries for obvious reasons- after all nobody likes monster garlic breath after eating.

Well, after eating some of their garlic fries you definitely wouldn’t mind having garlic breath- it’s totally worth it.  The fries are 100% natural and made just right before you order, seasoned to perfection, and of course lots of garlic.

They will definitely give you a run for your money. You’ll be tempted not to order an extra side and then some more to go.

Personally, the only con to these delicious garlic fries is the fact that after downing several handfuls, I will not be able to date vampires anytime soon.

Wait… there’s more!

As stuffed as you may be, you can’t leave “Big Mike’s” without having some Tastykakes.  Forget Twinkies, Ding Dongs… heck even Gansitos. It’s all about the Tastykakes.  Sweet, fluffy and yummy pastries… the chocolate and the butterscotch krimpets are a must.
