Even though our parents and Public Service Announcements repeatedly tell us that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, most of us skip it- sometimes by choice, sometimes because we simply don’t have time, and sometimes because we don’t have many options. Forget cereal, cookies and even muffins… perhaps one of the most underrated breakfast foods is the bagel. I personally never gave much thought to them bagels— they’re usually sitting on the shelves right next to loaves of bread which takes much appeal from them since you know right off the bat that they’re not fresh. There are few bakeries that specialize in making fresh (and tasty) bagels on a daily basis. If you need your bagel fix or you’re simply hungry for something other than muffins and cold cereal, head over to “Bagel Broker”.
Rehab Mornings
Whether it’s on a Saturday morning after a long night of heavy partying or on a lazy and hectic Monday morning, we always need something to wake us up and bring us back to life. Depending on your mood it can be either some menudo, chilaquiles or a simple cup of coffee and a pastry.
You’ll find the latter at “Bagel Broker” in Los Angeles. Even though it’s a small tiny shop with little sitting space, “Bagel Broker” is filled with a loyal clientele and scrumptious bagels… hence the name.
Bagels Extravaganza
Unlike the mass produced packaged bagels you’ll find in supermarkets and pseudo-bakeries, the ones at “Bagel Broker” are a tad smaller than your “normal” fix; however, what they lack in size they make up for in taste and flavor.
“Bagel Broker” brings to the L.A. area some of the best bagels outside of New York (also known as bagel central).
The bagels at this joint are not only out-of-the-oven fresh, they are also mouthwateringly good. No bagels compare to the ones at this joint- they’re crunchy on the outside and chewy on the inside— pure bagel bliss.
Since I’m a fatty at heart, I couldn’t leave this place without trying more than one kind of bagel. I went crazy and ordered a bunch of bagels for days- first off with a regular blueberry bagel with honey nut cream cheese spread, followed by a jalapeño cheese bagel with jalapeño cheese spread, an eggwich on a wheat bagel, and a pumpernickel bagel with lox.
Of course I did not eat the whole thing by myself, but I did get to sample each and every one of those delicacies. The blueberry bagel with honey nut cream cheese makes the perfect day starter, es dulce sin ser empalagozo. The jalapeño cheese bagel with jalapeño cheese spread makes for the perfect snack between breakfast and lunch, it’s spicy enough to give you a kick without giving you watery eyes.
Now the eggwich on a wheat bagel was just alright. It was somewhat reminiscent of the McMuffin sandwiches at Mickey D’s— the bagel was good but the egg was too salty and undercooked, you might want to skip on this one.
I’m not a fish fan by all means so I was scared to even try the pumpernickel bagel with lox. Con el bagel de pumpernickel no hay pierde… the scary part was trying the lox (which is a thinly sliced salmon fillet that has been cured). It’s a rather odd combination- bagel + cream cheese + salmon. What could have resulted in a mess of catastrophic proportions turned out to be a yummy surprise. Again, I’m not into fish so I went back to the beginning and devoured the blueberry bagel.
“Bagel Broker” has definitely some of the best bagels in town… remember, since it’s a small place you’re better off getting your bagels to go.
Kudos to the friendly staff and the affordable prices.
