Every year, Brazil turns into the party capital of the world thanks to their Rio De Janeiro Carnaval. It’s definitely on hell of a party, but unfortunately not all of us can make it all the way to Brazil- let it be beause we’re broke or because we have no green card. So, if you want to experience the Carnaval (even if it’s to a tenth of it’s real magnitude), the Brazilian Carnaval in Los Angeles (now in its 8th year) will take place this Saturday, February 2, 2008 at the Queen Mary in Long Beach.
This celebration is as close as it gets to a real Carnaval… without even leaving the L.A. county. There’s lots of dance dance, parading and music. Of course it all happens on the same day as Brazil’s own Carnaval in Rio de Janeiro and Bahia.
This year’s theme is “Preservation of the Planet” featuring green and recycled decorations. The party starts at 8:00 p.m. and features Dandara and Pra Gandaia Band with Marchinhas, Sambas, Frevo, AxÈ music of Bahia. Also featured are: Samba Queen Maisa Duke, the Samba Show Dancers moving to batucada rhythms in their feather-sequined “barely there” costumes, authentic Brazilian food from Silvio’s Brazilian B.B.Q., real caipirinhas with Ypioca cachaça and Brazilian arts, crafts, Havaianas, fashion, and giveaway souvenirs of Mardi Gras beads, tambourines and shakers. Plus watch Carnaval from Rio de Janeiro aired LIVE on big screens, adding excitement to the largest Carnaval party in Southern California.
