The future is always something we are looking forward to. Some see it in a positive way; others have a grim perspective as to what the future has in store for us. When George Orwell wrote "1984" back in 1949 he transported the readers to a futuristic totalitarian regime in the year 1984. This play inspired by George Orwell's novel follows the story of Winston Smith and his life in a world where everything is über restricted, freedom of speech is almost null and the government controls everything and everyone. The contrast between Orwell's future and today is startling.
"1984" is directed by Academy Award-winning actor-writer-director Tim Robbins. This play marks his return to Los Angeles for a limited two-week engagement at the Roy and Edna Disney CalArts Theater (REDCAT) in downtown Los Angeles – part of an extensive national and international tour that has traveled to cities across the U.S. and to Hong Kong, Melbourne and Athens. This powerful new adaptation by San Francisco Mime Troupe's Michael Gene Sullivan contains brief, partial nudity and strong language. So leave home the kiddies home and check out this classic now on stage.
