Last Friday night the Whiskey A Go Go had a different vibe, instead of the usual head bangers or punkers, the headliners were two of the hardest working bands in the Latin Alternative music scene in Los Angeles, Vispera and Dioses Del Tiempo.
The Whiskey is a historic venue that has seen some of the biggest stars in music play on its stage like Janis Joplin, The Doors, Buffalo Springfield, Led Zeppelin and later on, the Guns & Roses, Metallica and many others.
As has been the case with many clubs on the Sunset Strip, the Whiskey has changed their approach to booking bands and most shows are based on the “pay to play” model, which basically means that the bands performing have to sell a certain amount of tickets or they don’t get on stage, but even with this challenge, Vispera and Dioses Del Tiempo were able to have a full house who came to see them perform, which I feel is not only a victory for the bands, but also for the fans who support the music scene and are not afraid to invest a few dollars to help out the scene and the bands instead of rushing out to the free concerts offered at other venues in which only the promoter and the club make money off of the drinks being sold and the band’s talent on stage, while the bands hardly ever get paid.
As far as the music is concerned, Vispera took stage first and singer Alfred Mejia stated on stage that he had not slept in the past two days thinking about their performance at this historic venue and those sleepless nights were rewarded as the fans connected with the band from the very first notes. Even the casual fans of the Whiskey who did not speak Spanish got into the groove and were rocking along with the rest of the Vispera fans.
Dioses Del Tiempo closed out the show in great fashion as they rocked through songs from their present album Después de Mil Siglos. With great command of the stage, lead singer Gerald López lead the band with his melodic voice while Paúl Barajas put the rock & roll feel with his riffs on the lead guitar, at the same time Alejandro Michipanero pranced around all over the stage with his charisma and his rhythm guitar chords and Efraín Bárcena attacked his drum set like a man possessed and amongst all this commotion, like an anchor Daniel Gómez kept the whole thing together with his bass.
Before taking some time off from live performances to finish off their upcoming album, Vispera will be playing at the House of Blues on August 28th and the band is also participating on the Rockstar Energy Drink Uproar Festival 2014, Battle of the Bands and you can vote for Vispera here.
