La Santa Cecilia at MacArthur Park

Before heading off to Argentina for their first ever promotional tour in the southern hemisphere, La Santa Cecilia played a passionate and energetic show at the Levitt Pavilion in MacArthur Park near down town L.A.

From an early hour people gathered at the park and enjoyed some early entertainment by the Tierra Blanca Dance Company but it was clear that the fans were there to see their home town heroes and from the very first song, the front of the stage was swarmed by fans who wanted to be close to the action.

La Marisoul sang and pranced around all over the stage while Pepe Carlos showed us his mastery of his accordion and “requinto”, Miguel “Oso” Ramirez on percussion and Andres Torres on drums kept the beats sharp and energetic, Marco Sandoval gave the music that rock & roll feel with his guitar riffs and amongst all these controlled musical chaos, standing there, sharply dressed as always, Alex Bendaña gave the cool factor and kept the music in check with his bass lines.

The show was based mostly on their two full length albums, Treinta Días and Someday New and played songs like “Monedita”, “30 Días”, “La Morena”, “ICE (El Hielo)” and the track off their latest video, “Strawberry Fields Forever”, but they also played some old favorites like “La Negra”, “Vengo” and their cover of “Tainted Love” in which the whole park joined in on the chorus, but without a doubt, the highlight of the evening was when a group of young musicians from the Maqueos Music Academy joined La Santa Cecilia on a “banda” rendition of “La Morena” and the Mexican classic “Pinotepa”.

La Santa Cecilia is a band that has worked and hard to get to where they are now and nothing has been handed down to them, even after having reached high notoriety after being awarded a Grammy for their album Treinta Días, the band has continued to play all over the U.S. and they feel just as comfortable playing the Vive Latino Festival in Mexico, the Bonaroo Music Festival, the small La Cita Bar in down town L.A., the Royce Hall at UCLA or the opening of a laundry mat in the old neighborhood.

The pride of the La Santa Cecilia fans at the Levitt Pavilion show was palpable as they all feel as if they were part of the band, especially those who have been following the band since their beginnings and they see that the band has kept their humility and they are still as approachable as they were when they were playing house parties, quienceañeras and weddings.
