Not long ago, Wilfredo Mendez, member of L.A. based band Fitter, was diagnosed with a brain tumor and had to undergo surgery to remove it. After the surgery, doctors found traits of the cancer still in his brain, which may require Mendez to go through radiation therapy. Once the cancer has been eradicated, Wilfredo will need ongoing speech and occupational therapy to regain full usage of the areas affected by the cancer.
Like so many people in this country, Wilfredo does not have health insurance and will struggle covering the cost for his continuing medical care. In efforts to raise the estimated $20,000 that will help Mendez in his recovery, a fundraising web page has been set up on Go Fund Me. In addition, Wilfredo’s musician friends are organizing a benefit show with 100% of the proceeds going towards his recovery. The event will take place on Saturday, June 1 at Roberto’s Club in downtown Los Angeles.
Appropriately titled “LA Musica Nos Une” (the music unites us), the event will feature local bands Sonsoles, Solares, Vim Furor, Primo All-Stars and DJ Regend, most of which once collaborated with Mendez.
Art and photography pieces will also be on sell at the event, with proceeds going towards the fundraising goal. A $10 donation is suggested at the door. And to further help someone who has already given us so much through his music, consider making an online donation here.
