Diamante electrico en vivo

In only three years, Colombian power trio, Diamante Electrico has quickly become a force to reckon with and has been wowing audiences all over Colombia and at some of the biggest festivals in Latin America, including Vive Latino and just recently opened up for The Foo Fighers at the El Campin Stadium in Bogota Colombia.

Ahead of their upcoming tour through Mexico and the U.S., we spoke via telephone with bassist and singer Juan Galeano and here we share an excerpt of our chat.

Al Borde (AB) – For those not familiar about Diamante Electrico, please tell us about your beginnings.

Diamante Electrico (DE) – We are three friends who have known each other for a long time, we all had our musical projects but none had worked out to our satisfaction so we joined forces out of frustration with our individual projects and this month we had our 3 year anniversary.

AB – Tell us about the success you have reached in such a short time.

DE- When we began working together, I told the guys that I just wanted to record music and play without any pretense or any goals and then things just started to happen and the music took off.  Everything that has happened with the band has happened in a very natural way, the songs and the live shows and people have naturally gravitated to our music; even the first album was recorded in a week and in these last three years we have had over 80 concerts, which for a rock band in Colombia, it is a lot of shows.

Diamante Electrico CoverAB – What are the musical influences of Diamante Electrico?

DE – We are very much influenced by the blues, the Nashville sound and the English and American bands.  I am personally very influenced by The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, and American bands like The Doors and younger bands like Jack White, The White Stripes, The Black Keys and in fact, our first album was recorded in Nashville and it has a sound that comes very much from the gut.

AB – With so many influences, you have been able to mix them well and at the same time you have come up with your own sound.

DE – I always knew what type of sound I wanted and I wanted that raw feel to the music.  The first album was recorded in analog tape and with a stand up bass, which gave the band a very unique sound and we also wanted to stay as close to the Nashville vibe as possible.

AB – Tell us about the new album B and why the one letter title?

DE – Initially B was just going to be an EP of B sides, so we decided to call it B, but also because of “B” being the first letter of “Blues”; which, on this second album plays an even bigger part of the sound.  The album was recorded in one night in Bogota.  We had the studio for 12 hours, and by the end of 8 hours we had already recorded 5 songs, so since we had the time, we recorded another 3 songs almost on the spot and somewhat in an improvised manner and we ended up with a full album and we are very happy with it and the fans here in Colombia have received it very well.

AB – Tell us about this mini-tour through Mexico and the U.S.

DE – We are very excited, earlier in the year we played at the Vive Latino Festival in Mexico and we had a great reception, so this time we are going to do a couple of shows in Mexico City, and we will have our first live shows in the U.S. beginning with L.A. then Nashville and New York City at the LAMC.

Diamante Electrico will be playing their first show in the U.S. at the Viper Room in Hollywood on July 2nd, before heading off to Nashville on July 4th and July 8th and 9th at the LAMC in NYC.
