Banda de Turistas in Los Angeles

Argentine band, Banda de Turistas, are currently touring in Mexico and this weekend they will make their way up north to play Los Angeles at Los Globos this coming Sunday August 16th.

With the release of their single “Quimica” ahead of the album Lo Que Más Querés , the band was catapulted to super star status in their native Argentina after the single topped the charts for several weeks and it also allowed the band to go up a few notches in popularity in the rest of Latin America and especially Mexico. The album Lo Que Más Querés, released by Nacional Records, quickly rose to the top of the charts and was nominated for the Carlos Gardel Award which is the equivalent of the Grammy in the U.S.

To catch up with the band, we spoke to bassist and singer Bruno Albano via telephone and here we share an excerpt of our conversation:

Al Borde (AB) – With a little more than a year from the release of the album, Lo Que Más Querés, how do you feel about the album now?

Banda de Turistas (BDT) – It has been a very functional album because it has allowed us to play in many places, and some that we had not played before, it also allowed us to refresh the live show, I think it’s a much better show now.  It was also a very big surprise with our single “Quimica” which was the number one song in Argentina for almost 4 months in a row and it took the band to a new level of popularity as we had always been more on the indie or underground scene.

AB –In other interviews you had mentioned that when you went into the studio to make the album, you wanted to make an album that would play well live, after a year of playing it live, how do you feel about that now?

BDT – Yes, we had the idea of making an album that would work well live.  On previous albums we always found some songs that didn’t quite work that well on the live stage and we are fortunate that we were able to achieve that with this album and we are very happy with the results, it has worked extremely well live and we play almost the whole album during our live shows.

AB – Listening to the album it has a very eclectic sound, you have the pop sound of “Quimica” but then you have other songs that are somewhat Beatlesque, others a bit more electronic and throughout the whole album there’s a great variety of sounds, which I would assume it also allows for a more balanced live show.

BDT – Exactly, we want the music to have different personalities because that also give us more opportunities to discover, we don’t like bands that only play one genre, we find that music boring, so we like to mix it up and we may have a dark song like “Lagrimal”, a romantic song like “Dejarte Ir” and the pop of “Quimica”

AB – What can people expect from your show at Los Globos this coming Sunday night?

BDT – It will definitely be a rock & roll show, some psychedelic interludes and some experimentation, but all with a lot of energy, and we are very much looking forward to this show, so we hope you will join us for a night of good rock & roll energy.
