What do Day of the Dead sugar skulls, zombies and the President-elect of Mexico have in common?

I asked around my circle of friends to find the most affordable Halloween costumes for this year. I was not surprised to find that many of them were choosing to dress as Day of the Dead sugar skulls or zombies. However, a costume idea that came up in conversation and that surprisingly seemed to be quite popular was that of the President-elect of Mexico, Enrique Peña Nieto. Interesting, right?

Well, as stunning as I would look dressed as the former governor of the State of Mexico with greased-up hair and trademark suit, I think the sugar skull or zombie idea is more up my alley, for this year at least.

Nonetheless, here are a few tips on how to achieve these popular and easy to do Halloween costumes with scraps of material and old clothing. I’m getting started on my costume as of now. ‘Would love to see your pictures if you choose to follow any of these Halloween ideas! Post them on Al Borde’s Facebook page here.

Happy Halloween!

The traditional sugar skull
Sugar skull kit: Fine brushes, face make-up to darken eye and nose sockets. Add colorful details on the rest of the face such as petals around the eyes, spider webs on the forehead, hearts and flowers throughout. With this makeup you can dress up as a Day of the Dead bride or groom.

The year of the Zombie
Zombie kit: green face make-up, fake blood and old clothes.

Get your grease on!
Peña Nieto kit: Hair grease, small comb, borrowed or rented suit, tie and dress shoes. Complete your look by having a blonde bombshell wrapped around your arm. She can represent “La Gaviota”. Get it?
