Unique art pieces are hard to come by. Fine art prints, monoprints, etchings, woodblock prints and linocuts that tell the story of day laborers in America, for example, are even harder to accrued
But on Sunday, June 24 at the Self Help Graphics & Art venue in Boyle Heights, unique pieces such as those that took part of the gallery’s “The Jornalero Papers” exhibit, will be on sale for collector and art lovers to acquire. The event is part of Self Help Graphics & Art’s Annual Print Fair & Exhibition where pieces that were worked on or displayed at the venue in the past year go on sale to the public.
On sale this weekend are pieces from its “Sueños Libres: West Coast Soñazos”,
“The Unpopular Inbetween (An homage to ASCO)” and “The Jornalero Papers” projects.
According to the “Sueños Libres: West Coast Soñazos” curators, 10 artists were invited to design fictional LP album covers in which they explored the album cover as a popular art form that simultaneously visualizes, documents and embodies the aesthetic and conceptual desires of various subcultures. Curated by Sandra de la Loza and Shizu Saldamando, the project enlisted Alice Bag, Sadie Barnette, Sandra de la Loza, Raquel Gutierrez, John E. Miner, Vincent Ramos, Reyes Rodriguez, Arturo Ernesto Romo-Santillano, Shizu Saldamando and Ana Serrano.
During the Print Fair & Exhibition, Loza and Saldamando along with project contributors will lead a panel discussion about “Sueños Libres: West Coast Soñazos”. The discussion is scheduled for 1-2:30p.m.
According to Joel Garcia, Self Help Graphics & Art’s Program Manager and curator of “The Jornalero Papers”, that project required artists to experience being a day laborer in America in order to take part in a special printmaking atelier. The results were limited edition fine art serigraphs that explore the artist’s dreams of opportunity, met with the realities of oppression, abuse, and physical pain.
Jose Roberto Barrera, Alfredo Burgos, Mel “Melo” Dominguez, Joel “rage.one” Garcia, Jose Gonzalez, Hugo Martinez, Irwin Sanchez, Ricardo Santibañez, Xavier Tavera and Noel Vargas Hernandez collaborated in the project.
Inspired by Amelia Jones’ essay, “Traitor Prophets”, “The Unpopular InBetween” includes fine art limited edition serigraphs by artists Cindy Santos-Bravo, Alexandro Segade, Eamon Ore-Giron and Felicia Montes, whose work has been influenced by ASCO.
Additional serigraphs and monoprints will also be available during Self Help Graphics & Art’s Annual Print Fair & Exhibition. Due to limited on site parking, the use of the Metro Gold Line (Pico/Aliso Stop) is highly encouraged.
