Every once in awhile, actors can still surprise us. Drew Barrymore dying at the beginning of scream. Robin Williams managing to play a creepy photo developer (that could have been a lot creepier if cell phones hadn’t replaced cameras) in One Hour Photo. Matthew McConaughey actually starting to do good movies….and be good enough in them to win an Academy Award and nearly an Emmy.
But perhaps nothing can be as striking as Patrick Stewart taking on the role of the bad guy. And not just any bad guy. Sure he could have done the whole, surprise I’m the villain thing that Samuel L. Jackson tried to pull in Unbreakable, but let’s be honest and look at how that turned out (if you liked that movie, the last comment probably went over your head).
But no, this is not one of those shocking twists that throws a HOLY CRAP moment right in the end of the movie and suddenly everything makes sense despite throwing a wrench in everything you thought you already knew. This is one of those, “Holy crap, Captain Picard is effing creepy and I’ll never watch Star Trek or X-Men the same again” sort of surprises.
Too bad we have to wait until April 22nd just to see how much (April 15th in LA and NY).
