“Shout” – New Single From Patterns

Patterns Band
By | September 30, 2015

Costa Rican band Patterns has recently released their newest single titled “Shout”.  This new single is the first song from their soon to be released EP.  Patterns is a band that is taking the lead in this new wave of electronic dance music called “Tropical Nu-Disco”, which is a combination of Disco music and Indie Pop

Patterns began as a musical project between drummer Mario Miranda and guitarist Alan Rojas.  Miranda and Rojas came up with some demos and then looked for a singer that would fit in with this new concept and found the voice they were looking for in Michelle Gonzalez.  A few months later, bassist Luigi Jimenez joined the band, adding a unique groove to the concept.

In June 2013, Patterns released their first album, Dangerous Intentions, which even though it was sung in English, it reached # 1 in Costa Rica on the I-tunes charts and continues to be one of the top 20 best selling records in this new genre.

At the end of 2013, original singer, Michelle Gonzalez was offered the chance to pursue a solo career in Sweden and later on, founding member Allan Rojas left the band to pursue a career in aviation.  In came new singer Estefani Brolo and French guitarist Romain Garriot, which gave a new maturity to the project.

To find out more about the band and the new single, we had the opportunity to speak with new singer Estafani Brolo via telephone and here is an excerpt of our conversation:

Patterns shoutAl Borde (AB) Tell us a little more about this new sound, “Tropical Nu-Disco”?

Estafani Brolo (EB) – This sound is based on 80’s music, with lots of synthesizers, but with a lot of energy and we try to make it very danceable.

AB – Although the music of Patterns does have that 80’s dance music feel to it, there also seems to be a wide variety of influences, can you tell us more about those musical influences?

EB – All four of us have that 80’s influence, but within that, we all like different artists, for example, Mario is a big fan of Duran Duran and Tears For Fears; Luigi is more into world music and Fania, funk, and artists like George Clinton; I was always very taken with the music of Michael Jackson and even going further back to classic rock like Supertramp, Electric Light Orchestra and then Romain, brings in his European influences and the underground 90’s scene.

AB- And probably the question that everybody asks, why sing only in English if you are from Costa Rica?

EB – Yes, we get asked that a lot.  Before I joined the band, I had my own project and I also sang in English; and I also used to get the same question, and basically it comes down to this genre of music, it just sounds better in English as the phonetics of the language simply work better for this type of music; now, this doesn’t mean that in the future we are not going to do something in Spanish, but we don’t want to force it, it has to come naturally.

AB – Tell us about this new single “Shout”.

EB – “Shout” is probably the darkest song Patterns has done, it is different than anything the band has done before and it was like the ugly duckling and we all liked that and that’s why we decided to release it as the new single.  We also worked on the visual part of it and produced the video with a fully Costa Rican crew and we really worked in the image of Patterns and we wanted to take the viewer through a sort of time machine.

The new EP will be available in October and the band will be performing in Los Angeles at Boardner’s in Hollywood on October 21st.
