The Standard and Morrison Hotel Gallery present The Doors Check -In to the Standard, an exclusive photography exhibition celebrating one of the Sunset Strip’s great musical legacies, the Doors. This exhibition of historic yet timely images features the work of legendary rock photographer, Henry Diltz. Mr. Diltz shot the famed Morrison Hotel album cover and continued to collaborate with the band over the course of their career.
During the exhibition, which opens on Wednesday, August 15, his exceptional photographs of the band, many shot during the session for the MORRISON HOTEL album cover, will be available for sale.
The exhibition and opening event are timed in celebration of the Doors 2012 Sunset Strip Music Festival honor. The SSMF will kick off its 3- day festival by honoring the Doors on Thursday, August 16th.
The Doors had a transformative impact on popular music and popular culture. The band formed during the mid-’60s in Venice, CA and remains a vital piece to the legacy and history of the Sunset Strip. It was on the Strip that they got their start, first playing at the London Fog and soon after moving down the street to set up shop at the Whisky a Go-Go as the venue’s controversial house band. Their gig at the Whisky in the summer of 1966 helped the Doors sign to Elektra Records.
A billboard advertising their debut album appeared above the infamous Chateau Marmont in 1967. To commemorate this, the band was famously photographed, standing atop the billboard. Drummer John Densmore, guitarist Robby Krieger, organist Ray Manzarek and the late singer Jim Morrison have been dubbed as a group as one of the most influential and iconic rock bands of all time.
Henry Diltz is one of the best known and most influential rock photographers in the world. He is a visual historian of the last four decades of popular music. The rapport he’s developed with his musician friends enables him to capture the candid shots that convey a rare feeling of trust and intimacy with his subjects. For over 40 years his work has graced hundreds of album covers and has been featured in books, magazine and newspapers. His unique artistic style has produced power photographic essays of Woodstock, The Monterey Pop Festival, the Doors, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Michael Jackson, The Rolling Stones and scores of other legendary artists. Mr. Diltz continues his distinguished career generating new and vibrant photographs that inspire rock n’ roll fans from every generation.
Mr. Diltz is one of the featured photographers in the current WHO SHOT ROCK N’ ROLL exhibition at Los Angeles’ Annenberg Space for Photography. That exhibition includes a slide show of 80 of Mr. Dilltz’s images, shot between 1969-1990, and set to a soundtrack.
