On Saturday April 11, 2015, at the Plaza De La Raza on Mission Road in Los Angeles, a one of kind festival of music, art and Mexican wrestling will be held in an effort to raise funds for the Plaza de La Raza Performing Arts program that serves underprivileged children in the community.
Besides the art displays and wrestling, one of the main attractions is the music and for the music lovers there will be live performances by bands like La Resistencia, El Sonido Callejero, Profesor Galactico, Kotolan and various DJ’s.
La Resistencia is one of the most popular bands in the ska scene in Los Angeles, and its leader, Clemente Ruiz, has been a major force in getting the L.A. ska movement out of back yard parties and underground venues to major festivals like the yearly Ska-Wars festival, which brings together dozens of up and coming bands as well as well known local bands and international acts like Inspector, Maskatesta, The Toasters and others and the last two years, La Resistencia and the ska movement have been part of the summer concert series at the Levitt Pavilion at MacArthur Park.
El Sonido Callejero is an energetic combination of hip-hop, Latin rhythms, rock, cumbia, norteña and reggae influences that makes it almost impossible to stand still when listening to this band. El Sonido Callejero has been around since 2010 and shared stages with artist like Celso Piña, Inspector, and toured with Panteón Rococó all over the U.S. and has taken part in major festivals like the Latin Alternative Festival. After two released albums under the direction of founder, Arturo “El Director” Hernandez, the band has continued to release several singles which can be downloaded on iTunes or the band’s official website.
Profesor Galactico is one of most innovative and creative bands in the ska scene in Los Angeles and beyond. Embracing influences as diverse as rock, reggae, R&B, pop, hip-hop, electronic and artists as diverse as Johnny Cash, James Brown, Vicente Fernandez, Manu Chao and others. Profesor Galactico has been able to create a sound that is energetic, catchy, eclectic and very unique. During live performances, Profesor Galactico can make audiences sway back and forth to the vibes of reggae, dance to pop tinged tunes, skank to ska, or mosh to some ska-core.
Kotolan is a L.A. based alternative band that describes itself as a “Blend of art rock, Latin soul and Japanese 60’s pop”. Kotolan uses multilingual lyrics and sounds from around the world with a vintage twist to create a unique experience.
Just the caliber of musical acts would be enough to entice anyone to this event, but when you add the art exhibits and Mexican wrestling, this becomes the must go event for this weekend.
