Armando Palomas at Club Los Globos

Armando Palomas, the bohemian poet of Mexico will be performing in Los Angeles on Thursday, April 17th at Los Globos in Silver Lake

Cuevo and Vim Furor will also be part of this night of music and lyrics.

Armando Palomas has been around for over 20 years as an independent artist and although he is not very well known to the masses, Armando is one of the most important voices in Mexican music.  Armando Palomas sings about whatever he feels and doesn’t care if anyone gets offended or how he may come across. Armando describes himself as “I am just a guy who likes to have fun doing what I am doing.”

To learn more about his music and this show, we spoke to Armando via telephone from Mexico City.

“I am really looking forward to playing in Los Angeles, as I have a lot of blood family there and many friends so I am excited to go back and to be playing live” stated Palomas.

“I think this show will be a pretty long show, it has been about 4 or 5 years since the last time I did a proper show there, and I’ve released 4 new albums since then, so there will be a lot of new material and we look forward to having a good time”, said Armando.

Armando Palomas has been known for doing some pretty long shows, anywhere from 2-3 hours or even longer, to which Armando indicated: “My performances never have a set time, I am like the anti-artist, many artists sell their shows per the minute, as if art could be weighed and sold by the pound. Art should not be given time limits; I never like giving short concerts, unless that venue or whoever hired me has a time restriction for whatever reason.”

Armando has often been considered a rocker, a title that Armando has never quite accepted and he stated: “I am a happy drunk who likes to create songs, I don’t carry any flags, I don’t consider myself a rocker, or a cumbia man, I am guy who has stepped out of all the roles, because I touch on folk, blues, rock, mariachi, norteño and what is important is that I have always loved playing with the Mexican folklore but with the bases of rock & roll with the bass, electric guitar and drums, but I think most people identify with my music because of my lyrics more than anything.”

With Armando’s music being so eclectic I asked what music or who influenced his musical styles and he replied: “I am more like a blender when it comes to music, My father used to listen to La Sonora Santanera, Daniel Santos, Chava Flores, corridos, and Tin-Tan and others, then I was the youngest of 11 brothers and sisters, so they used to listen to CCR, Led Zeppelin, some of the sisters used to listen to Disco, others used to listen to groups like Los Freddys, Los Babys, Los Solitarios, and then I got into my own music like Calamaro, Leonard Cohen, Joaquin Sabina, Charlie Garcia, so I took all those influences and mixed up in my musical blender and that’s how I come up with my music.”

Armando Palomas will be playing at Los Globos this Thursday night along with Cuevo and Vim Furor, tickets can be purchased in advance through Ticketón and at the venue.
