Bunbury and Calamaro in Tijuana On a cold and foggy night, Last Saturday night, the two titans of music, Enrique Bunbury and Andres Calamaro brought their Mexican tour to an end at the Plaza Monumental in Tijuana, BC.

From an early hour, fans gathered outside the bull ring and regaled themselves with stories of the many Bunbury concerts they have attended. As the doors opened, in an orderly fashion the fans entered the venue and took their spots and were soon greeted by the different vendors offering anything from beer to piña coladas or stuffed churros. At around 8:30 p.m., Andres Calamaro and his band took the stage.

At first the fans appeared to be somewhat nonchalant, but as the band got into gear so did the fans and pretty soon, a communion had been bridged. Andres Calamaro was dressed in a black leather jacket and a cowboy hat that made him look more like a country artist than a Spanish rocker, but that look fit in perfectly with the music that was being produced on stage as his music is very much based on the American blues and rock & roll. With tight sound filled with slashing guitars, Calamaro and his band delighted the fans with such classics as “Flaca”, “Mil Horas”, “Salmon”, “Alta Suciedad” and many others.

During his tribute to his friend, Diego Armando Maradona, video of the football idol appeared on the giant screen showcasing some of his most important goals, which the fans loved. At the end of his set, Andres Calamaro got down on his knees and kissed the floor of the stage in gratitude and the love he has for Mexico and its people. After a short break, Enrique Bunbury and his band, Los Santos Inocentes took the stage with the usual Palosanto tour beginning of the UFO flying through the giant screen and finally dropping Bunbury onto the stage.

As the previous leg of the Palosanto Tour, the show began with temas “Despierta”, “El Club De Los Imposibles” and “Los Inmortales”, but after that, the show changed and many of the songs from the current album were omitted and instead, the fans got a very healthy serving of classic hits like “El Extranjero”, “Los Habitantes”,“El Rescate”, “El Hombre Delgado Que No Flaqueará Jamás “, “Que Tengas Suertecita” and his version of Heroes Del Silencio’s “Desahcer El Mundo”and finishing off with “Si” and “Lady Blue”.

As it has become the norm on Bunbury concerts, Enrique has a sort of magnetism that grabs the audience and won’t let go and his passionate fans are more than happy to be taken on this energetic and often emotional musical ride. His band, Los Santos Inocentes also is able to attract the audience with their charisma and musical prowess as Álvaro Suite strutted around the stage with his rhythm guitar and solos and a stoic Jordi Mena put down some amazing solos, while Robert Castellanos on bass and long time collaborator and friend, Ramón Gacías on drums kept a tight grip on the music, as Jorge Rebenaque on keyboards and Quino Béjar on percussion adorned the music.

After a short break, Bunbury and Calamaro appeared on stage together and without much hesitation launched onto the Los Rodriguez classic, “Sin Documentos”, followed by another Heroes Del Silencio classic, “Maldito Duende”. The duo also took time to pay their respects to their recently departed friend and colleague, Gustavo Cerati, as they covered his song “Crimen”. The show continued with Calamaro’s “Estadio Azteca”, a cover of the Argentine tango, “Confesion” the now classic in Bunbury’s concerts, “Apuesta Por El R & R” and finishing off with “Infinito” and a final encore with Jose Alfredo Jimenez’ “Hijo Del Pueblo”.

At the end of the show, it was evident that both Bunbury and Calamaro had conflicting feelings about finishing the tour as they stated that they both hopped they could do this again in the future.
